That “do not harass” apparently needs to be said is wild. Social media really is the global town square… and by that, I mean it’s become a public, global pillory. I worry the old, medieval normal is becoming the new normal once again.

I just really like Sinners, and I thought the art was nice. I guess I didn’t think hard enough about how it might recontextualize the movie’s themes. For obvious reasons it’s a blind spot that I need to be better at addressing going forward.

Normally I wouldn't want to involve you in more community baggage, especially not after everything, but it just so happens that a controversial fanart that reinterprets Sinners with tadc characters has been going around, with the artist claiming you liked it.
Holy fuck this is spot on. The carceral state is living rent free in too many people’s heads… including people I’ve known who distrust law enforcement and the justice system. Some people want to be judge, jury, and executioner.

No matter how much they deny it, Americans, regardless of party, prefer justice though punishment rather than restitution and rehab. The people who want restitution *also* tend to want punishment. But mostly they want to be correct.
I genuinely believe there are those who don’t really want accountability. Making better choices and fixing problems isn’t enough for some. It’s “too soft”. Some are too eager to punish and shame, a spectacle and a game where every wrong is equal and forever. The only winning move is not to play.
If you are using this situation to harass us and others as an excuse to vilify black people - I see you, and I think you are the lowest of the low. Get fucked.

For clarity - I deleted the post about the “death threat.” It was probably by a troll - though I took it a bit more seriously that I perhaps ought to have done since it’s the first time someone’s ever sent me something like that.
You don’t have to like it when people you follow online fail. The problem is, social media offers a very incomplete picture. Not everyone sees the ways we hold ourselves and others accountable offline, and how we’ve changed through the years. Be uncomfortable - but remember that’s still a person.
