This is an excellent point that never occurred to me. Not only are comments the fuel that keep fanfic authors going, but they help the commenter practice critical thinking, media literacy, and expression of their thoughts.

This is my BIGGEST FRUSTRATION with some chunks of fans in fan spaces. It really is not a healthy attitude to foster - these stories AREN'T OURS, they are the creative team's, and they're being SHARED with us.
I think it's really easy for certain fans to let their own experience cloud their ability to appreciate authorial intent, or act like it doesn't even matter in order to prioritize their own feelings.

This is why a plot point in my sci-fi anthro concept is how media illiteracy around "sentient" AI characters caused serious consequences, whereupon the subtext becomes straight-up text. It eventually extends to commentary on transhumanism (transimalism?) scams and greater undertones of colonialism.
