There is no evidence in either pricing or deployment data that solar or batteries will slow anytime soon. As our Future Smart global growth model shows, the logical question is not to ask why is the transition so fast, but to ask: why on earth would it slow? bsky.app/profile/prof...

We're going to Germany to film new Living History episodes and looking at the Sixt website has me depressed. No interesting cars? We need something a little larger for all our camera gear and a little faster for what looks like 2,500km roundtrip wouldn't hurt. I suppose A6 it is? Any thoughts?

This is an easy story to tell, but it is hard to get done. The electric utilities and the data centers have seemingly unlimited resources and they are constantly trying to confuse everyone. Governors need good staff with the persistence to force big changes. substack.com/home/post/p-...

Every Governor Is Going to Pause Data Centers Through The Election.

Governor Abbott put in place a moratorium today. On last week's Volts crossover with Energy Empire, Dave Roberts, Arnab Pal, and I said this was coming. Here's why it happened.

True. But countries are greenlighting longer term solar programs to cut import exposure — Pakistan’s 10,000MW initiative. But projects approved now mostly break ground 2027+, so that demand isn’t what drove March’s export spike.

Not to dunk on this but it isn't really true that the Hormuz oil crisis is driving a solar boom. Here's this chart updated to June of China solar exports, showing that the March spike in exports has subsided and was therefore mostly just export tax rebate effects.

It amazes me in a quite a few places where Solar is an unbelievable no-brainer and yet I see very little. Been on holiday in Corfu this week, almost no rooftop solar at all. There has to be a good reason, bureaucratic I assume? Maybe high %rentals or that a lot don’t stay year-round?

An industry in crisis: VW confirmed 100,000 job cuts on July 24, Audi lowered revenue guide 8% July 27, Porsche extended its program to roughly 9,000 positions by 2035, BMW launched 8,000-place voluntary redundancy scheme July 29, Mercedes posted 22% EBIT rise on falling revenue

This offering seems to fit neatly into why the German car industry is under stress. Design an EV that costs a ridiculous amount of money, and then complain that not enough people want EVs and therefore we can't rush this whole EV thing and we have to protect the industry from unfair competition.

The secret's out: the Germans just surprised the Chinese with this one. 805km on a charge and a feel that sets a new benchmark for EVs. The downside is that this BMW makes everything I've driven since feel agricultural. It's hard to explain, you have to watch the video. youtu.be/k7QMtb9w3ls

A few markets like Egypt and Malaysia have taken government action to accelerate solar due to the Hormuz crisis. But in most places, oil and gas isn't really driving electricity prices much any more. Long term there is a probable effect from, eg, much faster EV adoption which benefits solar.

Not to dunk on this but it isn't really true that the Hormuz oil crisis is driving a solar boom. Here's this chart updated to June of China solar exports, showing that the March spike in exports has subsided and was therefore mostly just export tax rebate effects.

Chart from BloombergNEF and SinoImex showing monthly dollar-value exports of solar cells and modules from China, by market, from November 2024 to June 2026. They spiked to $4.5bn in March 2026 because a key China export tax rebate was removed, fell to $3.1bn in April - still high but possibly due to some spillover effects and deadline missing - and then are back to a normal-ish level of $2.2bn in May and $2.5bn in June.

Absolutely unbelievable how solar power has taken off worldwide during the Hormuz oil crisis. You don't have to hand it to him, but Trump may have done more to finally kick off a global civilization of effete librul solar users than anyone else in the West

Chart showing solar panel exports from China (the main solar panel maker by a long shot) growing steadily & mightily from 2018 through 2026, then spiking by almost 2x in March 2026.

A great read for those trying to understand what it means to say we're in "an AI race with China." China has been implementing an "all hands on deck" AI development strategy since Trump first instituted his tariffs 10 years ago. It has made incredible strides but the regime has big blind spots.

1/5 I went back to China to parse what is real tech from what is hype. The clearest fact: the depth of an alternative technological universe: ubiquitous E.V.s, more clinical trials than the U.S.; A.I. systems reaching into workplaces, schools, and even neighborhood trash bins.
