The Boeing IMIS was a 60s design for a crewed Mars landing. It used five NERVA nuclear rocket stages that were launched separately and attached together in orbit. Three stages were used to leave Earth orbit, one for the Mars orbital insertion, and one to send the ship home.

The Boeing Integrated Manned Interplanetary Spacecraft (IMIS) was a 1968 design for a Mars mission. Boeing estimated that this design could launch its first mission in 1985. It would use five NERVA rocket stages, each fired and discarded throughout the 460 day flight.

The Apollo Applications Program put together projects that reused the Apollo lunar mission hardware. One flown mission was the Skylab space station. An interesting un-flown concept was a Skylab variant using flexible roll-out solar panels.

During the Apollo Applications Program, Ryan Aeronautical (under contract from JPL) studied flexible roll-out solar panels as a power source for a Skylab-style space station. The idea was shelved, but NASA eventually flew solar arrays of this type for the first time in 2017.

A Soviet MPK crewed lander separates from its MEK mothership and begins its descent. The MEK was a Soviet concept for a crewed Mars expedition, using a nuclear-electric engine which sat at the end of a long boom to protect the crew modules from radiation.

The MEK approaches Mars. The MEK was a Soviet plan for a crewed Mars landing, using a ship equipped with a nuclear electric powerplant. On the front is the MPK lander, which was, unusually, asymmetric. The crew compartment was protected from the reactor by a large metal shield.

HALCA / Haruka, a Japanese orbital radio telescope in operation from 1997 to 2005.
HALCA / Haruka was a Japanese space-based radio telescope active from 1997 - 2005, used for Very Long Baseline Interferometry. Space radio telescopes are surprisingly rare. Counting HALCA, only four have been launched.

Project UPWARD mapping the moon. This was a joint NRO / NASA plan to send an Apollo capsule to photograph lunar landing sites using a modified recon satellite.

This would have had a Apollo CSM carry a modified KH-8 recon satellite to photograph landing sites. Despite being cancelled, the project details remained classified until 2010.
