A photo taken a couple of years ago at Manchester Art Gallery just as I'd sat down with my coffee. I looked up and a beam of sunlight was shining through a tall shuttered window into the cafe.
Underneath the sash window was a round wooden table and a couple of chairs. On top of the table was a box full of cutlery and a table number.

In case anyone is feeling a bit hot tonight, here's some nice cold icebergs from Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon in #Iceland taken in Nov 2025.

Still lagoon crammed with turquoise and black icebergs, with blue/grey foreboding skies above and some brightness above the glacier and mountains on the horizon.

The weekend starts here! Here's an oldie from one of my favourite mountains in #Iceland - Eystrahorn. There were some weird and wonderful clouds overhead that day back in Oct 2023.

Mesa Arch, Utah, is a much-photographed place, but as with many much-photographed places, there's a reason for that! I arrived too late (missed early alarm) & arrived to a wall of tripods, & definitely no room. Fortunately they all left about a minute after sunrise :)

A black-and-white photograph of a solitary, wind-sculpted pine on a rocky, high-altitude ridge. The trunk rises from bare, weathered wood pocked with knots, then curves sharply right and arches back down, so trunk and canopy form a rough C-shaped arch open toward the camera. Dense, dark foliage crowns the top of the arch, while pale, bare dead branches, rim-lit by the sun, extend from the trunk’s base and across the ground to the right. Through the open space beneath the arch, layered mountain ridgelines recede into the distance, dark conifer forest thinning into rocky terrain closer to the tree. Above, heavy clouds fill the sky, dense and dark across the upper third, breaking into lighter streaks lower down, with clear sky near the horizon. The foreground is rough alpine ground: dry grass, rock, and dead wood.

Compositionally, the curved trunk works as both subject and frame: its arch encloses the distant ridgelines like a natural window, adding depth without a figure for scale. The dark silhouette of trunk and canopy separates cleanly from the brighter sky, a strong use of figure-ground contrast that keeps the tree legible against turbulent cloud cover. Placing the trunk near the left third, canopy peak upper right, follows classical compositional balance. The high-contrast treatment pushes the canopy toward near-total black in places, echoing decades of wind exposure.
