Before the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948, local hospitals were funded by subscriptions and voluntary contributions from individuals and local organisations. In 1922, the Abertillery & District Hospital Linen League was set up by local women to offer their help to the hospital.

An excellent, restorative morning at Mayday Rooms - an archive of radical movements and subcultures - getting to know the lovely people there and flicking through some eco activism material. Also turned up some stuff on radical gardening for one of my fringe projects.

He means institutions like mine. Would Birmingham be on the list to close its research? Doubt it. People are not automatically better researchers because they work at the Birminghams of this world.
