"boots theory" isn't a formal theory, but economists largely agree with the underlying idea: when you're short on cash, you're often forced into choices that cost more over time. it describes liquidity constraints and poverty traps. poverty is costly precisely because it's expensive to be poor

I think the rejection of boot theory is important from a policy perspective because it leads to the obvious but somehow elusive truth that cheap goods benefit poor people and we should celebrate cheap goods
