community building is as close to a pan-ideological concept as humans get. i fully agree that this othering behavior is counter-productive to leftist goals that i support. i am also aware that the global far right (esp the RSS) is extremely effective at being patient with recruits
@jpmcgee.bsky.social · 3d agoOne of the most leftest ideologies is building community. Making someone an “other” by saying they are crossing the picket line is pretty fucking anti-left if you ask me. We should be patient with others. Most of us are still trying to do right while unlearning some bad habits.
it's a little disappointing that the sky out there is now filled with satellites. but not disappointing enough to tip the scales against a) how nice it is to see the stars so clearly, and b) being able to connect to the rest of the world

Teefa@tifaret.bsky.social · 3d agoI think that, as a general rule, any quote post resembling "This is the dumbest fucking thing I've ever read" is in bad form. You are engaging with emotional gratification, not discourse. And often enough, this style will alienate someone that probably agrees with you on a lot of other things.
i really wish atproto had something like a bidirectional mute, to limit ease of access for low effort harassment while still allowing moderate+ effort engagement from critics
had a lovely morning listening to npr with my wife while we both worked in a warmly lit room, thunder in the distance, and enjoyed a nice vegetarian breakfast the sapphic stereotype rocks, every time i have leaned into it my life has improved. what am i still missing, other than a subaru?

every bad manager (including worst self management) i've known has had this approach. why (have someone else) think about how to do this efficiently when i can have cheap labor (inc my own) do it now?! 😤
austin (e/accordion 🪗)@thebadcode.com · 2w agothis is NOT an ai-hater post but i see a lot of folks that reach immediately for tool-using agents to drive the execution of repeatable steps when they could just... have their agent write a script. the latter is likely to be 100x more token-efficient
our college's psych told my now wife they couldn't have ptsd bc they didn't witness the attempted murder of our roommate. wife had him pull the dsm-v off his shelf and show them the diagnostic criteria. it did not support his claim

Forget ai they don't even do a database search of your symptoms? I'm not the "use bayesian inference for everything" type but surely it would be useful for determining likely diagnoses?
if you're ever in houston, check out the menil museum - it's free, and has a substantial surrealist wing collected from just a few painters (including Magritte), which lets you get a feel for their work in a way that's not possible through the screen or museums with just a couple examples

idk if i "actually" have adhd and i am definitely over prescribed in the sense that if i could ever remember to refill my meds on time, i'd have too much. but the meds help me live independently & the diagnosis helped me learn about and thus better manage things like RSD
ren faire@lathrys.at · 3w agothe other thing about ADHD (and conditions like it) is that people just totally fail to understand what ‘over-diagnosis’ and ‘over-prescription’ of stimulants for sub-clinical patients means we should want that! it’s the right error to make! easier access means more people get life-saving meds

the extent to which potentially problematic tech-cult dynamics are bay-only & not part of the broader ecosystem is hard to underestimate. it feels identical to fending off "ew evangelical/catholic priest" accusations as a responsible protestant congregation that's been fighting them for generations
