The #Ebola #Bundibugyo outbreak in DRC's Ituri province is now the 2nd largest in known history, having overtaken the 2018-2020 outbreak in North-Kivu & Ituri in a matter of 2.5 months. Hard to say how big this one will get. Can't see it ending anytime soon.

The recorded death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is about to cross 1,000 cases. In reality there have likely been a lot more deaths already. Many new cases appear to have no link to known cases, suggesting much of the spread is still happening in the dark.

Yesterday marked two months since the DRC declared the ongoing Ebola outbreak, @drtedros.who.int says in presser. "It's now the third largest Ebola outbreak on record, and in the past months, it has expanded faster than any previous outbreak."

#Ebola: DRC is trailing in posting new numbers. They had been posting on a one-day delay, but there have been some gaps of late. The numbers as of 6/29: 1,333 confirmed cases, 399 of which were fatal. An increase of 26 new cases from the previous day. A hike in contacts identified, which is good.

The current Ebola outbreak, alongside a recent hantavirus incident in a very different setting, is a reminder of how outbreak risk is actually unfolding today. As both a researcher in this space and someone who has worked in outbreak response, this pattern is becoming increasingly familiar.
