I think it's because #DefundThePolice didn't pan out.
Hey Minneapolis. Can someone explain it to me like I’m an idiot: why is MPD allowed to just spend money they don’t have and then say “we’re over budget.” And there’s never any questions that the city has to pay?
AU is Athabasca University, all for remote learning and remote teaching... except not to help the professor in this case "the only treatment available to her son in Canada was to amputate both of his legs [but] In Austria, he could receive regular pediatric surgeries as he grows, and save his legs"
"AUFA is taking the unprecedented step of publishing details of a personal grievance, and calling on all members and supporters for their help – AU is forcing a member to choose between her job and her child's legs." aufa.ca/blog/2026/7/...
Further on the same hand, the media just needs to make sensationalism stories more and more to lure people in, to get those eyeballs. That is a tried-and-true mainstream media tactic: do whatever works to get those eyeballs. It used to be "if it bleeds, it leads" but that doesn't always work.
Just so everyone knows, this is a tried-and-true mainstream media tactic. For progressives/leftist candidates, every election is a “crucial test” and any loss would serve as proof to the media that the latest left-side moment is at its end. Any win, though, just means it’s time to find a new test.
Another question for the musing: who gets to decide what the prerequisites are for whether someone gets to shape public opinion or policy?
I think there's a case to be made that we should care whether people in power are, in fact, total jerks. In today's video, I muse about exactly that: why isn't empathy treated as a prerequisite to shape public opinion or policy? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Not that difficult "cuz it's not me and you / it's the fucking banks. Bring the Noize when we run up on them."
you could post this underneath so many people's takes on the scandals and the incompetence, and maybe they would learn or maybe the appeal of the so-called scandals and so-called incompetence is just too much to overcome for some people
Interview in Vogue about HIDING IN PLAIN sight, on sale for only $2.99: “Trump covers up crime with scandal and covers up malice with incompetence. His administration would like you to think that they’re inept, that they’re just stumbling into these situations.” www.vogue.com/article/sara...

Today an animal shelter has been established at the Spokane County Fairgrounds for residents evacuating with pets and livestock. #SpokaneFire
As wildfires sweep through Colorado, Beth & her team of 15 volunteers have turned the Colorado State Fairgrounds into a refuge — rescuing 140+ animals & sheltering 1,400+. Watch Duty helped them track conditions & keep crews & animals safe during rescues. More from Beth👇
As David Suzuki noted during a CBC Ideas interview looking back at his 90 years, we're currently in a situation where people need to self-organize to be ready for the climate-related threats that happen - and governments need to support people self-organizing. It's too much even for good governments

I did have a glimmer of hope from this headline that Israel had arrested some settlers for causing violence. But no. Settlers went into an off limits place; 4 Palestinians were killed as well as 2 Israelis, then Israel arrested close to 100 Palestinians. They even did a huge raid on a hospital. 1/

Innovation at the Commonwealth Games: Both of the losers in the semi-finals of boxing get bronze medals. It's like if both England and France got third place in the World Cup because they didn't make the finals.

Big thanks to the 31 people who have supported since last night! We've raised $1,717 so far, which is a great start. At this pace, we need 850 more people to donate to reach the $50,000 goal for our legal defence. Etransfer info@thegrindmag.ca or visit www.thegrindmag.ca/support-the-...

"Right now, we have authoritarian moments and symbols and events overlaid onto something that still resembles the United States we knew before Trump. I think right now we’re going to find out whether this very fascist movement is able to dominate in the way we know they want to."
I spoke to @shaneburley.bsky.social about my book Strange People on the Hill for truthout and we got into an important question -- what happened to the hate groups? When the government is a hate group with fascist ambitions, you don't need them as much. My answer: truthout.org/articles/whe...
Full of despair today. Massive lay offs in social sciences and humanities across the country, Burnham puts out a video saying 'AI can write an essay', and my university is busy integrating co-pilot into all staff and student computers. We are being told we're defunct and there's no resistance.
"We need you to channel your rage, frustration, and grief into effective, strategic BDS action now."
Upwards of 200,00 people may have lost their jobs today; or will in the upcoming days. There is a palpable sense of fear among the Haitian community right now. They need your support.
My Haitian friend was just fired from his job. "They said I don't have a legal status now." This is likely happening to hundreds of thousands of people across this country today. Sick.
If people are living their expansive lives without taking the time to fight fascism when the fighting is needed, well, do they really deserve those expansive lives? (Not everyone gets those) If people are on social media and not posting about fighting fascism? "There's no neutral on a moving train"
We need more smart people to figure out he's pretty intelligent at his con game. i mean, just count how many people he's played...

This is why I'm so fucking allergic to our era of tankies, dirtbag leftists, and liberal "abolitionists." I despair because they signify a desperate self-destructive turn to shallow dishonest messaging, one that fearfully discards, repulses, and damages our best assets.

In case people aren't noticing that the temperatures are going up as we're being boiled like frogs, i think the climate change thing is here now. It is always easy to ignore it in favour of other engaging activities though ... except when they get called off or abbreviated due to the climate thing.

Heidi Berger of "Foundation for Genocide Education": “We’re very clear. We call Hamas a terrorist antisemitic organization that wants to obliterate the State of Israel and kill every Jew in the world, but we stop there, because we’re there to talk about the Holocaust based on survivors’ stories” 1/
Despicable and honestly unbelievably depressing that so many of these organizations that are supposed to be teaching the lessons of the Holocaust are vocal enthusiastic supporters/defenders of a genocidal apartheid state *and* a wanted war criminal. Truly makes one lose hope in humanity.
