AU is Athabasca University, all for remote learning and remote teaching... except not to help the professor in this case "the only treatment available to her son in Canada was to amputate both of his legs [but] In Austria, he could receive regular pediatric surgeries as he grows, and save his legs"

"AUFA is taking the unprecedented step of publishing details of a personal grievance, and calling on all members and supporters for their help – AU is forcing a member to choose between her job and her child's legs." aufa.ca/blog/2026/7/...

Further on the same hand, the media just needs to make sensationalism stories more and more to lure people in, to get those eyeballs. That is a tried-and-true mainstream media tactic: do whatever works to get those eyeballs. It used to be "if it bleeds, it leads" but that doesn't always work.

Chris Geidner@chrisgeidner.bsky.social · 2d ago

Just so everyone knows, this is a tried-and-true mainstream media tactic. For progressives/leftist candidates, every election is a “crucial test” and any loss would serve as proof to the media that the latest left-side moment is at its end. Any win, though, just means it’s time to find a new test.

As David Suzuki noted during a CBC Ideas interview looking back at his 90 years, we're currently in a situation where people need to self-organize to be ready for the climate-related threats that happen - and governments need to support people self-organizing. It's too much even for good governments

I did have a glimmer of hope from this headline that Israel had arrested some settlers for causing violence. But no. Settlers went into an off limits place; 4 Palestinians were killed as well as 2 Israelis, then Israel arrested close to 100 Palestinians. They even did a huge raid on a hospital. 1/

Israel detains more than 70 suspects after deadly violence in the West Bank | CBC News

Israel's military says it detained more than 70 suspects across the occupied West Bank overnight and on Saturday, a day after troops deployed across the territory following violence that left four Pal...

Innovation at the Commonwealth Games: Both of the losers in the semi-finals of boxing get bronze medals. It's like if both England and France got third place in the World Cup because they didn't make the finals.

"Right now, we have authoritarian moments and symbols and events overlaid onto something that still resembles the United States we knew before Trump. I think right now we’re going to find out whether this very fascist movement is able to dominate in the way we know they want to."

I spoke to @shaneburley.bsky.social about my book Strange People on the Hill for truthout and we got into an important question -- what happened to the hate groups? When the government is a hate group with fascist ambitions, you don't need them as much. My answer: truthout.org/articles/whe...

Full of despair today. Massive lay offs in social sciences and humanities across the country, Burnham puts out a video saying 'AI can write an essay', and my university is busy integrating co-pilot into all staff and student computers. We are being told we're defunct and there's no resistance.

If people are living their expansive lives without taking the time to fight fascism when the fighting is needed, well, do they really deserve those expansive lives? (Not everyone gets those) If people are on social media and not posting about fighting fascism? "There's no neutral on a moving train"

In case people aren't noticing that the temperatures are going up as we're being boiled like frogs, i think the climate change thing is here now. It is always easy to ignore it in favour of other engaging activities though ... except when they get called off or abbreviated due to the climate thing.

Heidi Berger of "Foundation for Genocide Education": “We’re very clear. We call Hamas a terrorist antisemitic organization that wants to obliterate the State of Israel and kill every Jew in the world, but we stop there, because we’re there to talk about the Holocaust based on survivors’ stories” 1/

Despicable and honestly unbelievably depressing that so many of these organizations that are supposed to be teaching the lessons of the Holocaust are vocal enthusiastic supporters/defenders of a genocidal apartheid state *and* a wanted war criminal. Truly makes one lose hope in humanity.
