APTN News@aptnnews.bsky.social · 23h agoTonight on APTN National News: A First Nation in British Columbia grapples with over 200 homes destroyed by out-of-control wildfire. A First Nation in Ontario under evacuation orders is concerned it may be lifted while the community is still at risk.
And for Canadians across this land, it is a kick in the teeth to call this climate bomb of a project “in the national interest”. It is in Big Oil’s interest for sure.

Can’t get this story out of my head. The delays aren’t unusual, the cost comes out at $100k per unit or ~$400/month rent for those non-market homes. Same issues come up for market housing, developers could keep building at lower rents if munis did not impose those delays and uncertainty.

Terrible news … the Bradley Creek wildfire near Vernon has destroyed hundreds of homes. 30 homes belonging to members of the Okanagan Indian Band are gone, more than 200 non-band member homes were destroyed.

When I say❗️PROTECT WORKERS❗️from wildfire and heat hazards, it’s me and my outdoor colleagues everywhere. We’re the workers. BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation does not provide specific requirements for wildfire smoke, a delusional “common sense approach” that protects profits not people.
The system has been flawed for a long time when it comes to emergency management. There is heavy reliance on agencies other than BC Parks to handle emergency situations in much of the province
This type of scenario is a disaster waiting to happen throughout most of the B.C. Parks system. When I had BC Parks contracts, I was required to create and update emergency plans for each campground every year. But most campgrounds had no requirement for overnight staff on site.
