I'm a little bit careful about who I talk to about what I'm really doing with some of my writing. Not everyone's prepared for what's really up.

Circumspection Around My Work

Depending on the circumstances, I can tend to be fairly circumspect in talking about my work. The Dragoning, for example, can be fairly challenging for men. I have put a trigger warning on it for them, which is a little bit of a joke but also completely serious. I’ve had men tell me that they tried to listen but they just couldn’t hack it.

A few months ago, I had a small epiphany on how the arts tend to work in this country. There's a whole separate economy flowing under the arts.

The Dabbler Economy

When I first moved to New York City, one of the most important lessons I learned pretty quickly was how much I had to be on my guard. I remember how shocked I was by the fact that everyone I encountered was either trying to upsell me or full-on scam me. I remember walking away from a hairdresser in tears because my stylist charged me an extra $20 to blow dry my hair, a service I definitely had not wanted.

On Monday, Joan Sebastian Guerrero was shot and killed by ICE agents in Biddeford, Maine. Reports say Guerrero was authorized to legally work in the US and not even ICE's target. @annayeo.bsky.social was on the ground Tuesday in Biddeford and spoke with locals—including one man who knew Guerrero.

Like a Dog on a Roof

Watching a recent performance made me think a lot about this special ed class I spent some time in years ago. I’d been brought in to teach a playwriting residency to the entire fifth grade. They wanted the plays to be about bullying, in order to tie in with some school curriculum. I think they didn’t really think through what this would mean.
