I did this as a bb grad student and the established scholar's response was basically, instead of asking me to smuggle your ideas into a published piece I can't change, how about building your own work out of it/off of me. Not their intent, but I learned a big lesson about how criticism works then

at every academic conference panel Q&A there's someone who raises their hand with "more a comment than a question" that ends up just being a ramble-y complaint that the paper would be better if it was more like their own work. anyways glad I haven't been at a conference panel with emily wilson
