I do try to be supportive of local ventures, but they don't make it easy. Look at the absolute state of this new signage they're crowing about. www.facebook.com/share/p/1JxK...
From today, EU citizens have a legal right to know when they're talking to a bot or looking at a deepfake, backed by fines of up to β¬15m. Thanks to Brexit, we're missing out on this protection.

βA large language model is a translation engine: it maps between representations of things humans have already written, and it does this so fluently that the fluency gets mistaken for understanding. That mistake is the entire equity story.β
At @tadethompson.bsky.social notes, burden of proof should lie with the accuser, not the accused. The seed of doubt now affects every writer doing any project. Fuck AI.
So I woke up this morning to find out that Ozzy Osbourneβs son made a video falsely accusing me of using AI to write a Rolling Stone article about the Tate brothers.

The worst thing about AI is how nobody trusts anything as being real anymore. The death of truth is the ultimate victory of evil.
Chuffed to bits with my framed original Japanese theatrical release poster of Conan the Barbarian, with artwork by Seito I had never seen before. A gorgeous piece of artwork. I decided to go for a mount which complemented the palette in the painting and a reflecting frame to match the sword.

Someone said to me, "I'm sorry but I got your book from a library." Nobody should ever apologise for that. You read my book! That's brilliant! I grew up hanging out in libraries and the idea of a world without them fills me with dread. Without libraries, authors, like readers, will only suffer.
Every time Iβm guest at a big Con, someone will approach my table, see my array of cyberpunk books, and ask me where they should begin. My short answer is always this: anywhere you like. They're all stand-alone. But here's the long answer: nappertime.com/my-books-whe...

Iβve read both a very different, much earlier draft of this, as well as the opening few chapters of the final version @bingewriting.bsky.socialβs upcoming novel EXHUMATION. Expect mind-bending cross genre thrills begging to be made into a streaming show or a movie!π
Delighted to share the UK cover of Exhumation. Early reviews are calling this my best one yet. I think it's certainly my most ambitious. Out in October! Preorder if you can!
At the beginning of my writing career a well known SF author publicly eviscerated the first thing Iβd ever written that was truly my own for nearly ten minutes before I politely asked him to stop. It very nearly ended my writing career before it really started, but Iβm glad I stuck it out.
When you (an editor or a critique partner or a classmate) comment on someone's writing, you can absolutely deal them a disabling injury if you're thoughtless about it. I'm not saying anyone should be dishonest or refrain from pointing out issues. I'm saying
βThere is usually a band t-shirt in there too, half-glimpsed under the jacket. It is chosen so a certain kind of reader leans in and goes, no way. If you clock it, we are friends now. If you do not, it stays our secret, and that is fine as well.β I also stood near a motorcycle one time, too.

Ai-generated submissions clog up the limited resources these outlets have by making their staff jump through extra hoops to try and identify bad actors. Itβs an exhausting and thankless task that could be better spentπ
One thing being discussed in SFF circles is how SFF magazines are getting lots of AI-generated submissions purported to be written by authors of marginalized identities. A good example of how GenAI is not any kind of tool of equality or diversity, but really the exact opposite.
βWhen a brand changes hands this many times, the name becomes the product and the pan becomes a cost to be managed beneath it: thinner steel here, an offshored handle there, a warranty rewritten by lawyers instead of engineers, and so onβ¦β Excellent reporting and hard wearing alternatives listedπ

This is the kind of idiocy you get on Threads. I think the main purpose of pursuing a PhD is to develop your thinking, research, and communication skills, which you can't do in 45 minutes on Claude.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 12: In a world in which most agents and publishers may receive as many as 100 unsolicited manuscripts per day, some literally written in crayon, and have (if they're lucky) one member of staff to deal with them all, gatekeepers are essential. Don't take it personally.

I think one reason data center outrage is so pronounced is people spent decades recycling and composting and otherwise scrimping to offset energy use and protect clean water, and the second we hit an inflection point for cheap electricity the banking industry said weβre taking all of it, fuck you
