Number 4 (and the last I post) is a rust fungus that I haven't seen before, with aecia on Leucanthemum vulgare. The spore size indicates it is Puccinia leucanthemi-vernae, which has Carex caryophyllea as alternative host. Carex montana, host for a similar rust, was also present. #fungifriends
Number 3 appears to be the rarest of the fungi I found this weekend; Puccinia globulariae (Kogelbloemroest) on Globularia bisnagarica (Gewone kogelbloem in Dutch). Only a few georeferenced records in GBIF. The leaves had dark spots were the rust's telia were located on the underside. #Fungifriends
Number 2 in the series plant parasitic fungi I found in the Eifel last weekend; the smut fungus Urocystis colchici (Herfsttijloosbrand) on Colchicum autumnale. Soetenich #fungifriends #smutfungus
A small collection of fungi from last weekend in the Eifel. Number 1; the rust Puccinia angelicae with urediniospores on Angelica sylvestris (Gewone engelwortel in Dutch). Sistiger Heide. #fungifriends #rustfungus
Excited to share our discovery of a new programmable RNA-guided DNA-targeting system hiding inside bacteriophages that predates CRISPR. We call it VIPR (Viral Interference Programmable Repeat), and it uses an entirely new logic to find its targets. Thread + link below.

Weer een Thlaspi alliaceum, dit keer in een boomspiegel in Zuilen, Utrecht
We sequenced the genome of 'desert ginseng' (Cistanche deserticola) - a leafless parasitic plant that gave up photosynthesis - and found it lost huge chunks of its own genome…but started stealing genes from its host! Thanks to my collaborators Prof Huang + her talented team👏🏻 lnkd.in/evF5iU9G
The fact that Americans thought Auxin was a “Hoax from Europe” rightfully got some attention in my latest #PlantScienceClassics post. But it’s actually even funnier if you learn about the context & consequence of White speaking these words to Went at the AAAS Meeting in Pittsburgh. #PlantScience 🧪 🧵
When Frits Went once failed to demonstrate the effect of auxin at an AAAS meeting, it was White who loudly declared “that the auxin business was obviously a hoax and that it was high time that these charlatans from Europe were sent back to where they belonged”. An experience that shook Went.
The Biodiversity Heritage Library is turning 20! 🎉 We’re starting celebrations with a special anniversary blog series #BHLat20: Treasures from BHL, featuring remarkable works chosen by the people who know them best: blog.biodiversitylibrary.org/2026/03/cele... #ILoveBHL
Phragmidium sanguisorbae (Kleine-pimpernelroest in Dutch) on Poterium sanguisorba (Kleine pimpernel). Multicelled dark teliospores, 60-70 um in length. Found this weekend in the Kennemerduinen near Haarlem (NL). #fungifriends #rustfungi
🎉 Huge news for BHL: The Field Museum is taking over the hosting of BHL’s website, servers & infrastructure, ensuring long-term stability and access for its 63+ million pages of open biodiversity literature. Learn more: blog.biodiversitylibrary.org/2026/02/tran... #BHLTransition #ILoveBHL 🌍 📚 🧪
A bit of sun yesterday and Mibora minima (dwerggras) flowering in the dunes of South Holland. Today it snowed again. No spring yet.

Yet another case of Uromyces plumbarius on Oenothera lindheimeri (Gaura) in the Paris region. #Rust #RustFungus #UrbanPlantHealth #PlantHealthDay @wheatpath.bsky.social @erikslootweg.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

The rust Puccinia thlaspeos on Noccaea caerulescens. The rust infection changes the morphology of the plant; instead of flowering stems its stems are full of yellowish leaves covered with telea on the underside. Here on soil heavily contaminated with heavy metals in Kelmis, Belgium.
Happy to share this preprint confirming "Uromyces plumbarius first reported on Oenothera lindheimeri in Europe with widespread distribution and association with the rust hyperparasite Sphaerellopsis sp." Thanks @pascal-frey.bsky.social & @erikslootweg.bsky.social! doi.org/10.1101/2025...
#Rust on biennial gaura (#Oenothera gaura syn. Gaura biennis) maybe caused by #Uromyces plumbarius, here with telia & teliospores, Les Clayes-sous-Bois, FR. Species present in North-America (Bisby, 1916; doi:10.1002/j.1537-2197.1916.tb05434.x) but first occurrence in Europe ?! 🤔
found two Claviceps-parasitising fungi on the same plant in September this year. Fusarium heterosporum which colors the whole Claviceps sclerotium orange was the second. It has nice banana-shaped 3-septate conidia. #fungifriends
Epicoccum andropogonis, a fungus parasitising Claviceps, a fungal parasite of grasses. Here on Glyceria maxima (Liesgras). One of two Claviceps parasites I found this day in September this year on the same plant. I really like the brainlike structure (and its old name Cerebella). #Fungifriends
Ragnhildiana ferruginea ( www.mycobank.org/page/Name%20... ) on Artemisia vulgaris (Bijvoet). Common, but underrecorded in the Netherlands. Forms brown fuzzy spots on the underside of the leaves. Conidiospores light brown and mostly 1-3 septate.
Ter afsluiting: Kortsteelgalmug in 25 kmhokken. Van zeer zeldzaam naar zeldzaam.
A nice splash of color of the ascomycete Aleuria aurantia (grote oranje bekerzwam in Dutch) on a cloudy day last week. #fungi
Now is the time to look for Melampsoridium carpini (Haagbeukroest) on Carpinus betulus (Haagbeuk); the bright orange spores stand out on the fallen leaves. Until recently not known in the Netherlands, but in the last 2 years seen at 4-5 locations. These were found in Doorwerth, close to Arnhem.
Tilletia menieri on Phalaris arundinaceae (rietgras). Surprisingly smelly smut fungus with good looking spores. Near Tiel, the Netherlands. #wildplantdisease
