Tenure exists to safeguard #academicfreedom, which is necessary for all who teach & conduct research in higher ed. When faculty members can lose positions because of their speech, publications, or research findings, they cannot properly fulfill their responsibilities to advance & transmit knowledge.

Nevada PERS had strong investment performance again in FY2026, 12.5% versus the actuarial assumed rate of 7.25%. Many other factors go into contribution rates for the next biennium starting 7/1/2027, but this is good news.

Preliminary FY2026 investment performance report for Nevada Public Employees' Retirement System.  Overall return 12.5% for the year ending 6/30/2026, versus the actuarial assumption of 7.25% and the market benchmark of 14.0%.  3-year 11.9%, 5-year 7.7%, 10-year 10.1%. Private equity returns lag by 3 months and will be updated before the actuarial valuation and contribution rate-setting in November.

Today, the AAUP released the Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession, 2025–26. It is sobering. Full-time faculty salaries are down about 0.4% in real, inflation-adjusted terms. Average full-time faculty salaries remain 9.5% below fall 2019 & about 5.8% below fall 2008. 1/

Sometimes folks toss around the idea of a 'faculty lounge' as shorthand for a disconnected elite. Here's the reality: there's no lounge and most college classes are taught by underpaid adjuncts and graduate students.
