"I want my attention back. The thought wouldn’t let go." to think @craigmod.com wrote this 9 years ago! and I wonder given that algos are now more aggressive than they were back then, did the approach hold for him. me, i'll just time-box more apps. still deleting IG.. craigmod.com/essays/how_i...
How I Got My Attention Back
There are a thousand beautiful ways to start the day that don’t begin with looking at your phone. And yet so few of us choose to do so. Technology is commanding our attention in infinite, insurmountab...

I don't have an issue with people being wrong on HN. But the software they release after, man. Brief list. - Don't use vibrato for wow&flutter - Fe tapes do not max out at 13kHz or 15 - Dolby is a sliding band compressor - Tape hiss is nothing like quantisation - Pre/De-emphasis is always on

What are you doing this afternoon? NO STOP DON'T DO THAT! Instead, play this adorable 8-bit demake of Lemmings - all the levels you remember! just as incredibly cute and frustrating! - in your browser. This is SO GOOD (and they do the 'oh no!' sfx when you blow them up): buzzard1337.itch.io/lemmings
"%app% version %ver is a complete rewrite" imagine LLM-coded apps being a complete rewrite every time
sometimes when I forget why I ditched Logic, I open it, and it reminds me why in the first 10 minutes, then all is well again.
I can’t wait to pay more for Apple Music. Cuz, you know, it has improved dramatically (no, it hasn’t changed one bit).
simply timeless music, and it's almost impossible to fake the textures - tape, pedals, acoustic recordings, done with actual intent, like in the old times.

it will feel weird to watch Wimbledon on TV next year without hearing Andrew Castle’s voice. another loss for the Beeb, much more so for the audience.
How to Follow a Drummer but all the LLM patterns virtually prevent me from reading the text. Smiled at “I would genuinely love to compare notes”. I can assume the human wrote it.
I reset my instagram identifier and now it feels like new: much more generic recommendations, none of the things it thought i'm interested in (which I really wasn't interested in). I think I'll start doing this on a more regular basis.

Art question 🎨 What painting, photograph, sculpture, or piece of visual art has stayed with you long after you first saw it? Not necessarily your favorite. The one that lingered.
the web is dead. maybe if we, who see it as a craft, stopped responding to HTTP/x.x and forced out one slice – ours – then we can be happy in our DIY pen and let the algos do what they do best with the rest – the majority of existing stuff few care enough to visit not through a feed or search.
For whatever godforsaken reason I still _care_. The web started as a craft, and still can be. And when it is built as such, it shines. That said, it is increasingly more difficult to live in hope. I don’t blame or fault the people who exit. Unfortunately, this is the only game I know.
this stuff (not this post) damages Bandcamp’s reputation more than you think. In the end, passing BC from owner to owner will be the primary reason for it no longer being a reasonable choice
my 13 years at bandcamp are coming to an end - i’ve been laid off along with most of the remaining engineers. best job i’ve ever had, working with the best people you could ever work with. unceremonious end to quite a ride.
