I'm an economist at Université Libre de Bruxelles, interested in market design, climate transition and sustainability. Posting mostly in EN but sometimes also in FR and NL. Webpage: https://ecantill.ulb.be/
Heading soon for vacation in France and it's the first time I use this "forest fires alert " website ahead of a holiday (feuxdeforet.fr/cartes/feux/). The website is crowdsourced from fire services and citizens.
🔥 Here in Boston, like elsewhere, we're seeing air pollution from Canadian wildfires — the odd-colored sun, the haze, and the real health risks that come with it. This has real costs. @kclausing.bsky.social, @knittelmit.bsky.social and I tallied ways that U.S. hhs have experienced climate change.
Yes. Leadership is as important as governance.
Europe's standing will not be restored by shifting responsibilities from one building to another, moving competences between commissioners and directorates-General, or publishing yet another security strategy.
Europe's worst heatwave so far, in terms of heat stress measures and temperatures - brought to you by fossil fuels. New @wwattribution.bsky.social study showing how such deadly heat became possible in only a few decades. www.worldweatherattribution.org/fossil-fuel-...
May 2006: World Health Organization declares climate change a health crisis June 2026: second heatwave of the year in BE. Schools closed. Trains canceled, etc. Politicians: "Drink a lot and protect yourself from the sun". No discussion about climate adaptation. www.lesoir.be/755263/artic...

This new podcast series is REALLY good ! Interesting new insights and ideas on big questions. Every time. And I love the fact that they propose solutions to improve things.
Harvard Kennedy School economist Dani Rodrik was ahead of the curve predicting the end of neoliberal globalization. Now he's defying conventional wisdom again, saying the service sector—not manufacturing—is the most promising source of good jobs in the future. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/e...
Interesting concept, inspired by Country Overshoot Day and the like. For Belgium, we've passed our energy dependence day already. It was April 7 .... Net fossil fuel imports account for 73.4% of primary energy demand.
#FossilDependenceDay marks the day of the year from which an economy relies on imported fossil fuels for its energy. Some major economies use fossil imports to meet most of their energy needs, leaving them exposed to price and supply shocks 🧵 ember-energy.org/foc...
ECB to European governments: Please please invest in renewables, it’ll make our job so much easier. Plain as day.

As a prep for an interview with a journalist, I looked for info on the prevalence of long-term contracts for gas in Europe. I found this: globallnghub.com/europes-expo... I don’t know whether the situation in 2026 is similar, but if it is, it’s time for the industry to hire more risk managers. 😱
Timely info for those who worry about energy prices. The study comes from Norway. #substitutioneffect
What is “the E-Bike Effect?” “Those who bought e-bikes increased their average daily bicycle use from 2.1km (1.3 miles) to 9.2km (5.7 miles), a 340% increase. The e-bike share of all their transportation increased dramatically too; from 17% to 49%.” Fewer car trips. Via @lloydalter.bsky.social
In Belgium in 2025, wholesale electricity prices were negative for 408 hours. Not a great deal for producers. Today, incumbent Engie announces free electricity for its clients when this happens. #demandflexibility www.lecho.be/monargent/en...

Nice win-win way to phase-out gas: the utility identifies pipelines due for replacement. If it is cheaper to electrify all the buildings served by that pipeline than digging, they pay for electrification. In Belgium, we're still extending the gas network 🙁
My latest is a feature about Julie Liu, one of the most fascinating women I’ve had the privilege of interviewing. She basically invented the job of electrification contractor in NY, and is currently running all of ConEd’s whole-home retrofits. heatmap.news/energy/coned...
