I've written a new blog post in my series on #DuckDB. This one explores DuckLake and uses its time-travel mechanism to (attempt to!) solve a mystery surrounding how bogus data got into a corporate database. peterdohertys.website/blog-posts/t... CC / @duckdb.org

I'm being ghosted by a number of recruiters and people I've interviewed with. I find myself in the twisted position of following up about gigs I don't even want! (e.g. #AI slop cannon operator) just to find out the _WHY_ of it and/or to get *some* closure. 😵 #freelance #python #webdev #unemployment
I think I'm entering the stage of grief where I accept that my time in #tech might actually be over.
It'll never not be funny to me that using #Google SSO to log into calendly or whatever involves a redirect to youtube.com
I don't understand how pols continually add me to their #Substack newsletters without my permission. What's even more curious is that I've have to jump through hoops (e.g. email verification) to successfully sign up for the Substack newsletters (I know it's bad) that I am legitimately interested in.
I can't say I'm thrilled that #Tidal is raising its prices but I do have to give them credit for owning it and providing a link to cancel subscriptions front and center.
It's exciting to see that #Postgres 19 will introduce GROUP BY ALL which, AFAIK, was originally created by #DuckDB! www.snowflake.com/en/blog/engi... > Many of the features originally introduced by DuckDB (e.g., GROUP BY ALL) have been since adapted by other systems. duckdb.org/docs/lts/sql...
Friendly SQL
DuckDB offers several advanced SQL features and syntactic sugar to make SQL queries more concise. We refer to these colloquially as “friendly SQL”. Several of these features were first introduced by D...

Is there a #German word for this thing where an environmentally destructive housing or shopping development "pays homage" to the ecosystem they've destroyed? For example, Turtle Crossing or Hummigbird Meadows?
> When GRUB appears, manually select Windows every time it reboots until the update finishes. It may take 3–5 reboots depending on what it's installing. Just stay near the machine and keep selecting Windows when the menu appears. I guess 2026 isn't the year of the #Linux desktop after all!
> Ubuntu’s Julian Andres Klode acknowledges that this is “…a bit controversial and the outcome is not necessarily in the best interest of our users”. www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2021/12/grub... Yes, I can confirm that removing os-prober and breaking my dual-boot setup was not in my best interest. #ubuntu
OS Prober Disabled in Ubuntu 22.04, Here's a Fix
As OS-prober is disabled in GRUB 2.06, Ubuntu 22.04 won't add Windows or other Linux distros to your boot menu. We explain why and share a fix.

@nytimes.com The "Continue reading in the app -- it's better." modal which appears on the mobile web is maddening. I have to dismiss it every time I read an article. I will continue to read on the web, so please, *please* give me (paying subscriber!) an option to permanently dismiss it.
I'm so old that a coworker used to call me "Mr. jQuery" ... as a compliment. #javascript
#GitHub can't go two days without an outage but at last they were able to jam some new repository-level "Models" feature into the platform! #priorities #aipocalypse
I've just published a new blog post in my series on #DuckDB / @duckdb.org. This one explores DuckDB's Vector Similarity Search extension, the Quack protocol and how they can be used together. Please read, share and let me know if you have any feedback! peterdohertys.website/blog-posts/d...

I'd like to see any of these performative, tough guy conservatives talk shit about #vegans at an #EarthCrisis show.

So, I've always dismissed Queensrÿche because of that one line in _I've Got an Ape Drape_ but, wow, _Operation: Mindcrime_ rips!
My heart now skips a beat when I'm instructed to run `npm install -g ...`. Like, I'm just trying to install a Markdown preview utility but maybe I'll make a typo or there has been a compromise and I'll wind up installing a shitcoin miner or some self-replicating Sarlac worm? #javascript
I can't run a rinse load in my #Bosch dishwasher because it's on the wrong wi-fi network. 🤦 @jeffgeerling.com has a great post which touches on this situation here: www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2025/i-... Our brave new world is so, so dumb. #enshittification
I won't connect my dishwasher to your stupid cloud
This weekend I had to buy a new dishwasher because our old GE died. I bought a Bosch 500 series because that's what Consumer Reports recommended, and more importantly, I could find one in stock. After...

It's wild that #DCcomics aren't still putting out new Tiny Titans books. The series is the ideal gateway to the DCU and they've all been enjoyable for children and parents. Also, why aren't they available on DC Universe Infinite? I've emailed them about this twice and received no response.
Here's a blog post about my initial experiments with full-text search in #DuckDB. TL;DR It's a good, simple FTS solution for unconventional data sets. If you do need a more fully-fledged FTS solution (e.g. Postgres), then there's a clear migration path. peterdohertys.website/blog-posts/f...

They're some combination of digital drug dealers (i.e. algebraists of need) and pathological fraudsters. I don't understand how everyone ramming agents into their workflows and halving their headcounts doesn't see what's coming. A worthwhile read as usual from @edzitron.com

A great short post on DuckDB: peterdohertys.website/blog-posts/d... We certainly didn't expect “interactive installations and art projects” among the list of use cases, but we agree with the author that DuckDB could definitely work in that context too 🎨
