One day at #OzHA2026 last week was not enough, but I did hear some exciting papers and a wonderful plenary on family history, talked shop and life with fellow historians, and found Joy (the original!) at Macquarie Uni. Here she is alongside her bronze replica in Darlinghurst.

'Joy' is a sculpture of a woman leaning in a doorway-like frame by artist Loui Fraser. It recognises the role of sex workers in Sydney's Darlinghurst. A bronze replica now stands in the original location on Stanley Street (est. 2025). The original statue was removed following local objections in the mid 1990s, and has since been displayed at Macquarie University.
