Microbiologist, Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago, (don't block me, but I'm a) Department Head. Runner, Badger grad, Packers fan, proud dad. Like genetics, bacteria, bioluminescence, and birds. Views are my own.

Nik's been my barber for years. He works weekends, gives a good haircut at a good price, and is unfailingly polite and friendly. I forgot my wallet once and was going to run home, but he insisted I could bring it later and cut my hair anyway. We usually chat about our daughters. I hope he's OK.

Also, as with many things ASM in the last ~10 yrs, it isn't just a question of the decision but also how the decision was made. In the Bylaws (linked at ASM.org), Article I says we're the American Society for Microbiology. Article XII.2 says Bylaws are amended by majority vote of membership.

Some thoughts on my professional society’s re-branding, which drops “American Society for Microbiology” for just ASM Here’s the rationale: asm.org/about-asm/ab... “ASM today is more than American, more than a traditional Society, and we reach beyond microbiology.” Let’s take these one-by-one.

Agree with this thread and would add that it isn't just undergrads and neighbors who won't know what "ASM" means. As a faculty member in a Biological Sciences department, I don't know the acronyms for major societies for many of my colleagues.
