It had been a busy night for the Rune Carrier. Avalynne and the few of her crew that had not followed the Ultraviolet to the Core Worlds had thrown Vio a monumental party in the ship’s little mess hall. There had been singing and dancing. Drinking. Avalynne had done a lot of drinking. The rest of the diverse Rune Carrier crew, be they Accordites, remnants of the Infernal Order or the feline people of the Spaces Between, had been allowed to take part in the festivities. The Forge galaxy was wide and unknowable, chaotic and dangerous. But all were one in the glow of camaraderie. And the anima, the emotive energy that gave Mythmaker relics their power, had flowed like rivers of gold through their local space. And Rune would get to experience the joys of a crewed existence from now until the dying of the stars, whereas Vio was stuck here in the Spire as its eternal custodian. His ship body, and indeed his elven frame, were both far from here in a place Vio had never seen before. He couldn’t spy them through the Spire’s subspace telescope. Not that he was bitter. Vio and Avalynne had had their adventures. They had spent thousands of cycles jet-setting about the Forge, righting wrongs and claiming treasures. Making friends, losing them. Loving and being loved. Rune had only just started her adventure with her own beloved, and Vio was happy and excited for her. Envious, yes. He would give anything to go back and relive those precious cycles alongside Avalynne. But Rune was young, his precious little sister, and she deserved to have those same experiences that he had already revelled in.

The Spire’s system lay at the heart of the Sapphire Ascent nebula in the Near Traverse. It was a dense area of space, crowded with gemstone dust and strange, warped gravity. Vio didn’t get a lot of visitors. But one now spun in lazy orbit around his mercury frame in quiet anticipation of the cycle’s commencing. Rune Carrier, his sweet sister. A fellow sophont, and a fellow product of the ancient and unknowable Mythmakers, even if Rune herself still insisted that she was birthed by scientists in the distant Accord. She didn’t have a spherical memory core like Vio did, or so she claimed. And indeed, Rune’s long, boxy shape differed quite a bit from his own original body, the bristling hammerhead of the Ultraviolet. But the silvery, conductive, regenerative alloy that composed her decks was identical, even if Rune had that gaping hole in her side, filled now with pinkish, alien crystal.And whatever difference between their shapes, Vio recognised her kindred heart. He knew that she was alive in the same way that he was. She loved and she feared. She hoped and dreamed. This coming cycle, she and her crew would use the Spire to travel to the secretive Raven Manor so that she could have Madam Raven build her a flesh and blood body, just as Avalynne had done for him long ago. Perhaps she was a computer built by the Accord galaxy’s federated government, there was a chance. But that they should end up so similar… Vio sorely doubted she was right.

But Prime was smiling softly from the command console.“Don’t die,” she said. “And when you do meet Marcus Albright, tell him I said hi.”Finally, Fourteen… Pyrrha opened her eyes. Bright blue eyes, the same as Prime’s.“Fuck you, Chloe,” she said.And then, obeying a silent command from the girl’s augmentations, the egg-shaped pod hissed as it sealed itself shut around her. The roof of the pod bubbled and cracked as liquid alloy affixed itself firmly into the cracks. And Fourteen was gone from sight.“You too,” said Prime with a charming laugh.“Prepare for transfer to subspace!” Keira shouted. “Hold those connections steady!”Another rumble assailed the lab. Far above, the Revenant Beam would be making landfall. Did it know, Keira wondered? Was there something in that horrid, star-spanning mass that could tell what they were trying to do here? Surely not. Keira hoped to any God that would listen that it did not have mind enough to know their intent.And then, looking back to the far end of the chamber, she realised she had missed it. The egg was gone, and Fourteen with it. Gone into subspace and the realm beyond. The technicians began chattering between themselves as they too began to notice the absence.
