Why don’t more independents run for office? In a word: "spoilers." Our choose-one elections discourage independent & third-party candidates from running, & discourage voters from supporting them. Ranked choice voting would solve the spoiler problem, and give voters more choice.
In Washington, DC’s first #RankedChoiceVoting election, voters across all eight wards were likely to rank 2 or more candidates on their ballots. In the mayoral primary, voters in Wards 7 and 8 were most likely to use all five rankings.
In the last week, Honolulu, HI; Irvine, CA; and Longmont, CO put ranked choice voting on their November ballots. Voters in those cities will decide whether to join the 50 cities, counties, & states already using RCV. FairVote CEO Meredith Sumpter shares what this momentum means for our democracy.
