#WIPSnips 10.13 "blue" ...in which our hero witnesses some water magic. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #weirdwestern #queerwriters

Gas-flame blue wreathed his fingers once again, and then he plunged that hand into the water. The light burst outward in swirling tendrils that vanished beneath the hull.
The boat lurched and, for an instant, seemed to hang there, half-submerged. Then the river seized us and hurled us forward. The deck pitched beneath my feet, and I fell to one knee.
Water streamed across the deck and poured over the stern, leaving the boards damp but bare. Things that had been floating dropped to the deck with wet thuds, including the pirate’s body by the helm. Driven by that blue light, we surged across the black expanse, faster than the current, faster than the engine. It was the river itself, carrying us.

#WIPSnips I got yesterday's: "wall" I really love a dream sequence. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #queerwriters

At first the dream is just fire: orange red and licking upward over old wood. Smoke coats my nostrils with soot and seizes my lungs. Wailing comes in waves, mingling with roaring flame and distant screams.
Then the barn takes shape around me. Burning beams crack and pop overhead as the fire eats through them. A massive shape thunders through the haze, hooves shaking the floorboards: Daddy’s horse, it’s tail aflame.
Jeremiah, my older brother, emerges from a billow of smoke, eyes wide in his soot-streaked face. He looks behind him, then back at me, but there is nothing there except a wall of roaring fire.
“Micah!” he cries. “You hide, now. Stay down in the water! Okay? Now! Big breath!” He opens his mouth to take one in. I take one with him, too confused to argue.
He grabs me, and then I’m flying.
I hit the horse trough with a splash. Water closes over my head, blood-warm. Jer’s hand presses against my sternum, holding me down. And then it is gone. His hand, his face, everything but water.
My lungs burn. Above me, fire pours across the surface of the water like liquid gold. Bubbles blur it into shifting light, and I cannot tell which way is up. I flail, my hand striking something hot and metallic beneath the water. I want to scream, but I can’t. Panic blossoms hot in my chest along with held breath. Then, the fire is gone.

#WIPSnips October 1st - "injury" Been real busy with the new job, but I found one word to share. This snippet's a good nutshell of the character, too. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #queerwriters #mmfantasy

Watching the light go from gold to bronze, I tried not to think about my past, but that was impossible. For every submerged tower or painted daymark, a memory clicked into place like a set bone. Instead of headaches and nausea when I thought back, there were actual images and impressions in what felt like an unbroken line.
Before Redemption, I was at White Light, met Corbin, saw my old friend Amos. Before that, I spent two years and some months on the mountain; I clearly remembered two winters and three summers in a small cabin on a mountainside. There was a stream running by it; there had been a wolf that visited. Year two, I’d moved into a cave. I remembered the kills I’d made, the demons, the turnskins, and the people… because, yes, there were people on my ledger. That first year had been rough.
I remembered too the confusion and pain, the dreams and the visions. My brain had been putting itself together, after… after something big. I’d been wounded badly. What the injury had been, I couldn’t say, only that it had nearly killed me. Clearly, it had scrambled my brains. I remembered Raphael’s House, I remembered the Tank, but when? Behind those memories was a long haze of fighting, the Citadel, the rituals, the holidays, years and years and years. I was indeed the Order’s dog long since trained to the leash.

@rikiwilchins.bsky.social 2026 Oct LGBTQnation Op-ed by activist/scholar Warren Blumenfeld notes how oppressed groups often strike out those closest and asks if pressure from the Right's war on trans is pushing us to attack one another and "eat our own" instead of focusing who's really at fault.

The LGBTQ+ rights movement can only move forward if we learn to stop eating our own - LGBTQ Nation

Our internalized oppression is not our fault, but it's on us to take steps to reduce or even eliminate it.

#WIPSnips 9.19 - "tube" Don't have that, so we're going with "tunnel." IDK, might change it to "tube." ...any way, a magics lesson. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #weirdwestern #mmfantasy

Ethan Vanek WIP snippet

My boots crunched on the charcoal as I walked around the altar bowl, fighting that magic pulse, until I had one foot on either side of the Rift, facing that chaotic edge. Black lightning leapt from the band of magic, crackling around me as I lifted my sword.
Without knowing them, I heard alien syllables in my throat as I lifted my sword and pushed it, edge to edge, into the band of black flames. Reality screamed in protest as holy steel met demonic magic. Rays of blazing multicolored light streamed from the point of contact, but I bore down, still rhythmically chanting, breath tearing at my throat, boots scraping on gritty charcoal.
Dreamily, as blinding and deafening magic streamed around me, I heard a familiar voice. “See this grommet on your vest here? A Rift is like that, a ring in two pieces that makes a very thin tunnel. All you have to do is get in between the two halves. A little pressure, a little twist, and pop!”
I could almost see familiar lips in the round O of the word when the Rift did exactly that: collapsed with a sudden deafening concussion. That cut the last tether to my body and I watched from a distance as a mote of darkness sent me sailing backward out of the bowl before winking out of existence. There was a jolt as I hit something, and then darkness.

Daddy issues? Who, me?! 😆 (Not beating the charges on this one for sure) www.goodreads.com/book/show/25...

This book is at once a nightmare and wet dream. It will leave the reader shaking and damp with sweat. Rapturous and vile, a masterwork of psychosexual queer horror.

Dead Boys Don't Cry is written in a very abstract style that makes more emotional sense than literal sense. I'd compare it to something like a David Lynch movie but with Clive Barker's sensibilities. An absolutely harrowing experience, but one I'm glad I was able to have. Fans of extreme horror do not skip this one!
