Key messages from outgoing President Courtenay Norbury 1 we need to diagnose DLD. This builds awareness, research & services 2 language interventions give people with DLD more opportunities 3 use evidence based practice. And link what we do to what policy makers want to hear. #NAPLIC26
And our final speaker is specialist teacher @katestarrslcn.bsky.social who will be addressing pupil voice in Developmental Language Disorder. Knowing about DLD and lived experience are not the same! #NAPLIC26 #DevLangDis
All children have rights, but those with DLD need support of their rights are too be medically realised. @aoifegall.bsky.social's work cited too! #NAPLIC26 #DevLangDis
@katestarrslcn.bsky.social used lots of creative ways to collect pupils' views about school. Included mind maps, photos and posters. #NAPLIC26 #DevLangDis
And now we are hearing from Catherine Pape about the exciting nationwide project in Wales: 'Talk with me.' Focus is universal and targeted provision to protect specialist services for those who need it #NAPLIC26
Some fantastic phrasing of Early Years strategies here. 'let's turn screen time into me time' Brilliantly positive with no blame
One quote (of many!) that stuck with me: “For others language is a tool that allows you to synchronise with each other - for us it’s an unfaithful friend that trips us up” #naplic26
His mum comments he used to tell her: “I wish they knew I was smart” 💔. Really emphasises the need for teachers to know and understand more about DLD. #naplic26
Now is the time to stand up for children and young people with DLD! @speechandlanguk.bsky.social make it really easy to do. Email your MP and help them find the missing million: speechandlanguage.eaction.org.uk/the-missing-... #DevLangDis

Here is a picture of the mapping exercise I carried out (which shows that about 40% of children who currently meet criteria for EHCPs risk falling through the significant gaps):
And Finlay's final words about DLD. Raising awareness of DLD is so important. Most of his teachers only learnt about DLD once Finlay started in the school. #NAPLIC26
Frankie's strategies to support people with DLD 1 set the stage. No fluff 2 sieve. repeat without changing the words. As information will need to be processed several times 3 rendering. allow time to convert words to images 4 door. Spoken language can vary greatly 5 road. Finding the right words
Specific oracy strategies that help students with DLD include: 1 Explicit teaching of vocabulary 2 Language Frameworks aka sentence starters. 3 inclusive lessons. Eg: using videos but with subtitles, slowed playback time and repeat video. #NAPLIC26
Happy Birthday Naplic, and hello to John Parrott! Great memories of Naplic conferences and the committee. Keep up the great work! 🥂
NAPLIC is 40 years old this year. Former Chair John Parrott is giving us a history lesson. We started life as NATLIC, an organisation for teachers, but soon became NAPLIC to welcome all professionals. David Crystal was instrumental in establishing the organisation #NAPLIC26
Recent study found 3 themes 1 people don't see my DLD: strategies include working harder to go unnoticed, not putting hand up, copying 2 I don't want my DLD to be seen: feel shame. 3 being seen versus being understood. Staff have heard of DLD but don't really understand it. #NAPLIC26
'Camouflaging in Developmental Language Disorder' is the topic of @hannahhobson.bsky.social & Kate Kempton's presentation. An important but under researched topic. #NAPLIC26 #DevLangDis

I'm looking to recruit a PhD student (Oct 2025 start) to work on a project looking at the range of cues that guide accurate sentence comprehension. Unfortunately the funding opportunity is just for students who would pay UK fees. If you know any suitable applicants please tell them to email me.
Feeling very on trend having just read that the Guardian are leaving Twitter.
Got sucked in already. This is quite fun searching for people from the other place and feeling joy instead of doom.
