I would really dispute this on a number of levels. Note that while the U.S. experienced explosive growth in nuclear-reactor-construction costs after Chernobyl, France sustained a much flatter curve throughout the 1980s and 1990s. China United States France. Under construction Retired Nuclear reactors by commercial operation date 15- 1979 Three Mile Island 1986 Chernobyl 2011 Fukushima Vogtle 3 and 4, Georgia $15 per watt Overnight construction costs (US$ per watt)" 10- 5- The United States and France largely ceased new nuclear construction amid safety concerns and high costs. Flamanville 3, Manche $4 per watt 0 1970 1980 1990 2000 2010 2020 2030 This French nuclear buildout remains the most successful large-scale decarbonization initiative on record. The other big examples of emissions reduction involve countries like the U.S., Germany, and the U.K. replacing coal with a mix of natural gas and renewables but mostly gas.
