I teach Media Studies at The New School. I write about computational technologies, carceral power, and media philosophy. New book, The Carceral Surround: https://www.upress.umn.edu/9781517921255/the-carceral-surround/

this year alone: UIC paid $11.6M to Volt AI for surveillance data analysis, $4.4M to Allied Universal Security ON TOP of UIC PD budget, over $100K on flock cameras while enforcing hiring freezes+stonewalling on faculty contracts everywhere the same grift: $ for AI + cops, NO$ for education

The Spook Who Sat by the Ring Doorbell@hypervisible.blacksky.app · last wk.

“Over the summer, Rutgers University quietly paid at least $1.5 million for a powerful surveillance analytics system that can recognize faces, read license plates and identify objects…”

this is actually what I see as the central challenge of AI: not encountering intelligences comparable to our own, but the development of toolmaking processes/approaches that are fundamentally different than the ones that have for so long defined us as a species... the weirdening of toolmaking

With the book’s release, I want to give a brief overview and outline a few of the key arguments. I’d include links to contemporary events but there are too many connections. The worst part of writing about race, computation, and police power is that it is always timely.

Today's nonfiction release reveals how policing is less about managing crime than about governing possibility. "At once an expansive study of the framework of policing and an indictment of its logics." —Simone Browne R. Joshua Scannell: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lS9... @frannyrecounts.bsky.social

Book cover for The Carceral Surround by R. Joshua Scannell. Image of a shirtless man with shaved head, eyes replaced with blue light, cut into thin columns unevenly aligned on a concrete background.

It's alive! I'll do a series of posts on the book soon. For now, my absolute deepest thanks to everyone who lit the way and walked with me on the 11-year trek to make this real. There is no need to fear or hope, but only to look for new weapons. @uminnpress.bsky.social @thenewschool.bsky.social

THE CARCERAL SURROUND, by R. Joshua Scannell @frannyrecounts.bsky.social, is out today! It "offers new insight into racial capitalism and its mechanisms, and, importantly, its undoing." —Simone Browne www.upress.umn.edu/978151792125...
