Amen. If you go into the archives looking to confirm a hunch, you'll likely find some random bit of evidence that fits. This is why "originalism" is considered a joke by actual historians. Finding one quote from one member of the founding generation who agrees with your hot take is pretty easy!

I might have a working theory or a working hypothesis, but I’m certainly never *testing* it. That’s ripe for cherry-picked, law office history.
