Challenging #EU border violence via strategic litigation before EU (CJEU), European (ECtHR), and international (ICC) Courts.

Happy to share this conversation with Völkerrechtsblog about our work at @front-lex.bsky.social, strategic litigation before the CJEU, and access to court - from Palestinians before the Israeli Supreme Court to the limited access available to victims of Frontex before the CJEU.

Following our series of interviews, Antonio Guzman Mutis has talked with @iftachco.bsky.social , co-founder and co-director of @front-lex.bsky.social , a legal hub challenging EU migration policies through strategic litigation at the ECHR, CJEU and ICC.

What I told EUobserver about yesterday’s Frontex-OHCHR “Saving Lives at Sea” meeting in Brussels: “The word choice (Saving Lives at Sea) is cynical and gaslighting for Frontex’s victims, but the content itself is also meant to whitewash Frontex’s complicity”

A closed-door event - "Saving Lives at Sea" - jointly-organised by Frontex and UN high commission on human rights, is taking place Thursday in Brussels.

For the first time, a EU Member State contributed to the arrest of a Libyan militia commander. El Hishri ran detention sites in western Libya, where refugees are held prisoners in brutal and inhumane conditions. His trial is giving hope to condemn EU complicity in crimes against humanity.

🚨🛟 NEW EPISODE 🎙️🎧 Lawyer and @front-lex.bsky.social co-founder Iftach Cohen tells us about Alaa Hamoudi, a Syrian man who was pushed back from Greece to Turkey in 2020, under the watchful eyes of Frontex. He tells us how Front-Lex brought this case to the EU's top court and won!

Alaa Hamoudi was very unlucky to end up in the hands of Frontex and its Greek partners, but his luck turned when Bashar found him, and thanks to Bashar and his colleagues from @lighthousereports.com and @bellingcat.com, Alaa’s case was ultimately brought before the @eucourtofjustice.bsky.social

It's not often we get to report on hopeful news Alaa Hamoudi won in the EU's top court against Frontex! This opens doors for many survivors of Frontex pushbacks. @bdeeb.bsky.social tells how he reported on Alaa's case back in 2020 with @bellingcat.com. And how this evidence ended up in court.

“When Hans Leijtens instructs the officer on duty to pass on the location of a refugee boat to the Libyan militia, both know that the intercepted refugees will be exposed in Libya to crimes against humanity " Hamoudi v Frontex and FM v Frontex, pending before the @eucourtofjustice.bsky.social 👇

Aan de straffeloosheid van #Frontex, dat de buitengrenzen van de EU bewaakt, komt een einde. ‘Eindelijk worden pushbackslachtoffers gehoord', vertelt deze advocaat. dekanttekening.nl/blendle/fron... #pushbacks #migratie

The 1st #ICC trial concerning #CrimesAgainstHumanity against 'migrants' starts in 2026. Front-Lex will be there to represent the victims. The cases of 122 #EU officials are still waiting to be processed, front-LEX co-director @omershatz.bsky.social told Catalan TV. www.3cat.cat/3cat/liders-...

“Thousands of people who, until now, had no chance of simply accessing the Court. I’m not talking about winning or losing a case - just knocking on the Court’s door and seeing a judge willing to provide judicial protection.” Front-LEX's @iftachco.bsky.social, speaking to RAI 3 on Hamoudi v Frontex

Watch the full interview with Alaa Hamoudi on RAI 3 (English subtitles — link in the comments). In it, he talks about the pushbacks by Greece and Frontex against him and 21 others, and explains what the Grand Chamber judgment of the EU Court means for him and for those who couldn’t fight back.

Last week, Alaa convinced the Grand Chamber to set new rules on evidence in all Frontex pushback cases. Judges found his account ‘sufficiently detailed, specific and consistent’ and sent the case back. Continuing this litigation is costly. If you can, help us pursue Alaa’s case
