Excerpt:
Tryggve bolted upright. Not twenty paces away, crouched in the long grass, sat two hundred pounds of tawny death. The mountain lioness watched him with pupils growing wide and dark, tail swishing, muscle coiling and rolling over powerful shoulders.
Interrupted. Naturally. The goddess had never once let him finish anything. But sending him a contestant of that caliber, that was a first.
"Well, hello there, beautiful," he told her gently, rising by inches, sword and bag missing from his side. "I don't suppose you'd consider a peaceful parting of ways?"
She dropped lower. Haunches tensed.
"No. No, of course not. Nobody ever—"
She charged.
He hurled himself sideways. Wind from her passage ruffled his hair. He rolled up onto his feet, grinned, blew a lock from his eyes. "Missed me! Come now, surely you can do better—"
She could.
The second lunge caught him across the chest. Claws parted cloth and flesh. The impact flattened him, and then she was on him, all weight and heat and the putrid breath that stank of old kills. Jaws gaped above his face.
Well. This is a pickle.
