It used to be laudable to aspire towards cosmopolitanism and global citizenship among technocratic liberals. But when that cosmopolitanism points towards multiracial, Queer inclusive democracy suddenly it is outré to care what happens beyond the US. He ain’t slick.

You can put aside socialist-leftist prescriptions about how dangerous that alliance is, if you would like. But everything I read, across the political spectrum, agrees that these countries are connected. It is just civic maturity to pay attention to Brazil's election.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

A Matt Yglesias post, with the text:
Earnest take: I think it's probably not healthy for the practice of democratic self-government that so many people have developed strong rooting interests in elections in countries they don't live in.

Thanks to global solidarity, the keffiyeh team fed 60 families over three weeks. Together, we fight back against the deliberate starvation and cruel collective punishment of our people. Let us keep feeding hope and standing strong against injustice every single day.❤️‍🩹 chuffed.org/project/gkt
