A fascinating lecture on terraforming ecosystems! You can find it online here: www.umu.se/en/icelab/ne... It was very rewarding to organize @icelabumu.bsky.social's first public lecture - it certainly won't be the last! #complexsystems #sciencecommunication #bioengineering

Can we push ecosystems away from the brink of collapse? According to @ricardsole.bsky.social we can help life do just that with an interdisciplinary, #complexsystems approach guiding ecosystems towards recovery. Watch IceLab's 15-year anniversary public lecture: www.umu.se/en/icelab/ne...

Simple neuroscience-based hack for anxiety: 🌿go & be in a place with plants & trees for 15 mins 🌳You'll inhale plant oils(phytoncides) from foliage 📉your stress hormone(cortisol) will drop significantly Many of our brain pathways evolved to motivate us to forage for plants-they're still very active

When things are too busy and the world seems to be burning down...take a break. Seriously work is non-stop, the news is 💩 and I had no time for this ice dip and sauna session. There's never time though - so I just took the time. First time I dipped my head. I needed this.. #isvak #umeå

Our double waffle maker at work for my fika week! Doesn't look super appetizing here but they are nice and crunchy and thin. Which are your favorite waffles - Swedish, Belgian (Liege or Brussels), or the American style? I'm team crunchy all the way. Even better with #västerbottenost + #hjörtronsylt

#FridayFika and @gabbybeans.bsky.social and Hugo Harlin served up Valentine's waffles and some fikabröd in IceLab this afternoon. Nice and crunchy, with raspberry jam and strawberries. Love to all the #science and #waffle lovers out there!

Maybe now is the time to start up a collection of research that seemed 'pointless' to some and wound up being generally valuable to many people. Gila monsters and ozempic, bacterial warfare against viruses and CRISPR... fundamental curiosity in understanding our world - SCIENCE - needs protecting.

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen. Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !” globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

I must admit I was not mentally prepared for the total upheaval of this second T#€%p term - cutting aid, science funding, DEI initiatives, all the people put on leave, this is chaos and so damaging not just in the short but also long term. Carl Zimmer does a great job here summarizing some of it

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

This was a nice release from work stress today! Josephine at IceLab is so good at finding ways of pushing us all out of our grooves. Joint poetry writing as a little bit of whimsy and release. I liked the bat poem until it took a dark turn... see below!

What happens when you ask a bunch of computational life science researchers to write poems together? At today's #FridayFika in IceLab Josephine Solowiej-Wedderburn brought cranachan in to share in honor of Robert Burns day tomorrow, and led us in a creative poem writing exercise. Unspool the 🧵 👇

Quick plug for my fantastic friend @anapineda.bsky.social. We went to university together and she was by far the most talented, organized and diligent student in our biology degree. I believe students are STILL passing around photocopies of her class notes. She's here to help you focus + write! 👇

Interesting to see that the news wins over social media as a way to come across information in science in Sweden. Even more so in Finland, and comparable in Denmark and Norway. I wonder why this is the case in the Nordics? I'll be sharing this preprint with my #scicomm #phd students in April! #tisp

New #preprint! We surveyed 71,922 people in 68 countries to find out: Where do they come across information about #science? How do they #communicate about it? We also tested country factors like #AcademicFreedom and #PressFreedom and identified interesting patterns 🔎 ➡️ osf.io/preprints/os... 🧵 1/10

Ah, I just saw this. Love it. Perhaps I can hop on board a bit late - I guess here it is now the 20th and so should go with #Primary for #JanuArty - let's see what is in my photography treasure chest.

Day 19 of #Januarty is liquid. I have to admit, I already took a peek and, this prompt is flowing. My feed is a river of awesome art. I’m gonna go make myself some coffee to go with it. Cheers 🥂 ☕️

Image 1:
“A graphic promoting JanuArty 2025. The top of the image reads ‘JanuArty 2025’ in bold black text. Below it, a prompt encourages creativity: ‘Any medium, any style, any way you like; new or old, soft or bold, a prompt a day to create in your way.’ The main text in the center reads ‘Day 19: Liquid’ in bold, handwritten-style font. Surrounding the central text are colored art supplies, including markers, colored pencils, and a white ceramic palette with abstract black line designs on the right.”

Image 2:
“A prompt list for JanuArty 2025 featuring 31 daily art challenges. The title ‘JanuArty 2025’ is displayed in bold black text at the top. Below is a numbered list of prompts, some crossed out to indicate completed days. The prompts include creative themes like ‘A Favorite,’ ‘Color,’ ‘Shapes,’ ‘Liquid,’ and more. The surrounding design features art supplies such as markers and colored pencils arranged neatly, with a white ceramic palette featuring abstract black lines on the right. At the bottom, hashtags ‘#JANUARTY’ and ‘#JANUARTY2025’ are included, along with credits to the creators.”

How's it going 2025? A snapshot from today The kids need ice skates at school. I tear the house apart searching for them. No skates. My six year old informs me I don't care about him and points at me with disdain when a friend asks why he forgot his skates. The skates are in my husband's closet.
