She/Her | BSc Animal Behaviour (Hons) 🌍 Climate and nature nerd, science communicator, editor, podcaster 🦔 Hi there 🦋! Let's make waves. 🌊 All opinions are my own, and subject to change as science evolves and I grow 🌱 Comms Asst @beavertrust.org

Beavers are bringing resilience and life back to our ecologically sanitised, urban landscapes, and London is leading the way 🌱🦫 Had a great time filming this segment with @senizdoesnature.bsky.social, thank you for sharing your beaver-y world with us! So much change and joy in just three years. 🌍

What have beavers been up to in London? 🦫 Three years ago, Beaver Trust supported the release of beavers at Ealing Beaver Project, in Paradise Fields, West London. Last month, we caught up with Urban Beaver Officer @senizdoesnature.bsky.social 1/7

A promising sign from a restored peatland in Kent 💧 The River Stour (Kent) IDB and partners have been restoring peatland habitats. Since then, beavers have been helping to keep the peatland wet through this prolonged dry period, while creating new and varied wetland habitats. 1/3

The discovery of water vole activity is an excellent sign of a naturally functioning, healthy ecosystem.
Research shows that beaver activity can have a positive influence on water vole (Arvicola amphibius) populations by:
1
Ideal water conditions: Water voles have a strong preference for slow-moving or still water with stable levels
2
More diverse vegetation: By opening up the canopy, growth of lush aquatic emergent vegetation is stimulated
3
Connectivity: The canals and ditches excavated by beavers serve as protected movement corridors
4
leave food debris at feeding stations, which are valuable "leftovers" for water voles and other small rodents
Food availability: Interspecific competition is low, and beavers can

Text reads: Evasion of American mink
The primary threat to water voles in Britain is predation by the non-native American mink, Neogale vison.

Mature beaver habitats are structurally complex, and it has been shown that they provide complex hiding places and refuges, which makes it harder for mink to hunt them.

Surveys from the River Otter Beaver Trial in England confirmed that water voles expanded their range into the new wetland habitats created by beavers.

Who knew beavers created lawns?! We've learnt a lot by watching the kits. They forage close to the water's edge, using their sharp teeth to 'mow' the grassy banks, creating open spaces where sunlight can filter down to the ground and hopefully encouraging different species to grow.

Are you 16–18 and passionate about nature? Or maybe you know someone who is? 📢 The UK government is forming its first ever Youth Climate and Nature Panel. They’re looking for young people from across the UK to help shape nature and climate policy, share their views and inspire wider action. 1/2

Want to spend the next 10 minutes immersed in the lush landscape of a Beaver Wetland?🌱🦫🌍 I was recently lucky enough to visit the Cropton Forest beaver enclosure with Beaver Trust. You can read all about it in our blog 'Visiting a Living Landscape' that I wrote for our website. 👇

Could you have imagined the changes beavers would bring to this landscape? 🦫 The Beaver Trust team recently visited Forestry England’s beaver enclosure in Yorkshire, home of the Cropton Forest Beaver Trial. 1/3

Across Britain, beaver kits (now 4-6 weeks old) are starting to emerge from the lodge, swimming in an adult’s wake or riding on a tail 🦫 Kits are born with open eyes, a dense coat and small incisors, dependent on their family, learning skills in the lodge. [1/2]

Beavers play an important role in creating habitat connectivity for terrestrial mammals, and their dams are favoured over other structures. 🧪🌍

Beaver dams become bridges for mammals! 🦫🦊 Research by Daniel Arah -a student from @glasgow.ac.uk - highlights the role beavers play in creating connectivity in wetland habitats. To read more about Daniel’s research, find his poster on our website. 👇 🔗 tinyurl.com/3mceesk7

It's been great to work on Beaver Feed for @beavertrust.org. I've loved developing an innovative way to connect the beaver community with beaver science 🧪 and conservation 🌍 news, that brings together practitioners and enthusiasts without barriers. Creating a space for joy and discussion. 🧵 [1/4]

Join the Beaver Feed to keep up with the latest beaver science, news, and discussions! 🦫 You can contribute too - any relevant posts that include the word “beaver” or “beavers” will appear on the feed - so everyone can join the conversation. bsky.app/profile/beavertrust.org/feed/Beaver-Feed

Had a wonderful time photographing (and attending!) The #BeaversAcrossBritain conference. It was great to learn more about the far reaching impact of rivers from Leila Phillips, and challenge the ways I think, both about nature restoration and communication, thanks to Kevin Swift and Eilidh Guthrie.

ID guide for these globetrotting rodents! 🌍🦫 (Coypu are invasive in Europe and North America) I've seen so many coypu photos used in beaver articles recently. If you're a science communicator or a journalist, take a moment to familiarise yourself with the differences. - It may be handy! #SciComm

Do you know the difference between a beaver and a coypu? They may look similar, but they’re from opposite sides of the world. Often, photos of coypu are misidentified as beavers in the media. Once you know the difference, see if you can spot them. [1/3] #mammals #wildlife #beavers
