Have you submitted your #EGU26 abstract?! We‘ve put together a little list (non-exhaustive) of sessions that fit gaphaz topics well. See you in #Vienna #hazards #glaciers #permafrost #mountains #risk #science

Some good news from space, as the NASA-ISRO NISAR mission publishes its first synthetic aperture radar images of Earth. This spacecraft has a heckin' big antenna (a dish 12 meters across) for bouncing L- and S-band (25- and 10-cm) radio waves off the surface www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-is...

NASA-ISRO Satellite Sends First Radar Images of Earth’s Surface

Preliminary images from the most powerful Earth radar satellite ever launched offer a tantalizing glimpse of the science the mission will be able to deliver.

Today marks 60th anniversary of the Mattmark catastrophe, one of the deadliest glacier-related disaster in the Alps and largest catastrophe in Swiss modern history! 🧊🌊 30th Aug 1965: 2 Mm3 of Allalin Gl. broke off on Mattmark dam construction site, killing 88, many of whom were Italian immigrants 😭

First cloud-free optical satellite imagery from @planet.com show the destruction of Dharali village in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India. Unfortunately the source area in the mountains is still obscured by cloud and so the ultimate cause is still speculative. 🧪⚒️

A theory proposes that the cause of the 5 August 2025 landslide may be the failure of a large body of glacial material in the valley above the village. This seems more likely than a glacier collapse or a glacial lake failure. eos.org/thelandslide... This is speculation until we get better imagery.
