Some good news from space, as the NASA-ISRO NISAR mission publishes its first synthetic aperture radar images of Earth. This spacecraft has a heckin' big antenna (a dish 12 meters across) for bouncing L- and S-band (25- and 10-cm) radio waves off the surface www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-is...

Systematic attribution of heatwaves to the emissions of carbon majors - Nature
Climate change made 213 historical heatwaves reported over 2000–2023 more likely and more intense, to which each of the 180 carbon majors (fossil fuel and cement producers) substantially contributed.

Nice one @geophysichick.bsky.social! How far in advance did you register these?
This is really an extraordinary event: landslide, glacial failure, tsunami. But to me, the most exciting part is the sequence of tiny earthquakes that occurred before the slide. 1/n

There are a tremendous number of icebergs in Tracy Arm following the landslide-triggered tsunami. The reason for this is that ~300 meters of the north side of South Sawyer Glacier broke off and disintegrated into many many smaller icebergs as seen in @planet.com imagery 🧪⚒️
The Alaska Earthquake Center has posted updates about the 10 August 2025 landslide. The location of this major failure has now been identified. It was a large rock slope landslide that ran out across the South Sawyer Glacier. Their posts include an initial video of the site. eos.org/thelandslide...
It is likely that a large, tsunamigenic landslide occurred in Tracy Arm inlet, in Alaska on 10 August 2025 at 5:30 am. Seismic trace from the Alaska Earthquake Center, Satellite image (dated 7 August 2025 - before the landslide) from @planet.com. eos.org/thelandslide...
First cloud-free optical satellite imagery from @planet.com show the destruction of Dharali village in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India. Unfortunately the source area in the mountains is still obscured by cloud and so the ultimate cause is still speculative. 🧪⚒️
A theory proposes that the cause of the 5 August 2025 landslide may be the failure of a large body of glacial material in the valley above the village. This seems more likely than a glacier collapse or a glacial lake failure. eos.org/thelandslide... This is speculation until we get better imagery.
Dramatic images reaching us from Dharali village in Uttarakhand in the last hours. The consequences of this debris flow look horrendous, and our thoughts are with the local community and emergency response. More details will surely emerge soon. #cloudburst #hazard #debrisflow #remergency #risk
