Just used @flippercloud.io to enable customers of @fireside.fm to opt-in to a preview of an overhauled Fireside UI after months of heads down work. And if they aren't ready for it just yet, they can opt right back out and use the old UI while we iterate and improve based on customer feedback.

Pretty obvious-in-hindsight hack, but after working on some larger initiatives that couldn't just be easily shipped daily, the morale boost of working on things that _can_ be shipped daily is priceless. Finding ways to break things down in a way that they're shipped daily can work wonders.

Spent about ~30 minutes on an annoyingly squeaky/creaky foot. Re-did some screws with fresh Loctite. Added some teflon lubricant on the plastic bits. WD-40’d a couple of spots. Swapped out my sleeve for a new one. Every step feels ~30% better now. If only it was that easy for real body parts.

Perfect storm of events and timing sucked the excitement and enjoyment out of sharing for me this last year. Really appreciate all the folks out there sharing and lighting/stoking the fire. It requires so much time and effort share your curiosity, learning, and excitement, but it’s so contagious.

As someone who came from more of a design and front-end background, I put off digging into the Rails source code for far too long. Once I did, everything became easier to understand and reason about. Having a guide like Kasper in this format would have been huge. bsky.app/profile/kasp...

My software development philosophy: 1. Minimize external dependencies. 2. Actively upgrade dependencies. "Dependency" is just another word for "save a little time now in order to permanently increase your workload by committing to monitor changes and responsibly update it in perpetuity."

Really good shoehorns are underrated, but they need to be hefty metal ones that don't bend and are at least a foot long. Having several and keeping them stashed throughout the house is one of those small changes that makes a big difference.

TIL: `rails credentials:diff --enroll` (and `--disenroll`) Makes local diffs of encrypted credentials files display as diffs of the un-encrypted text instead of diffs of the encrypted gibberish. Helps reduce friction of seeing what changed in credentials when merging or navigating merge conflicts.
