I had a relatively nasty reply to this LinkedIn post. The reply was very much a "but he has a good point"; but used phrases like "oh do shut up", "you lefties", "Consume less soy, grow a pair, and find Christ." 🫠💩

i'm tired of "founder mode". it's time to go "engineering lead who still codes a lot and reports to the CEO but should probably spend more time building cross-team consensus" mode.

Every time I come across a piece of writing and think "given the tone of this writing I bet this person is obnoxious and annoying IRL", 9 times out of ten it's been written by DHH.

My neighbour's kids are more politically opinionated than most adults.

A phpBB-esque network largely targeting the province where I grew up (RIP though, ~1 year ago) Many of my long-standing friendships formed there. Discussions were relevant. IRL meetups. Musicians put on shows/concerts to help fundraise for hosting costs. Nothing has come remotely close to it.

In Canada, hernias are more deadly than homicide (source: www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/t...) If governments want to ACTUALLY help and protect their citizens: • Improved healthcare and health education • Access to mental health and other social services • Maintaining a right to privacy

I think I need to call this out, because I'm seeing a lot of posts pop up where people are thinking very black-and-white: if you're still on X/Twitter, you're morally corrupt. This is such a poor way of looking at this, a very "us vs them" kind of mentality that we need to abolish.

Leaving any long-standing group can be difficult for people. There are emotional and social identity components you have to just drop, and that can hit some harder than others. It can also lead to being ostracized or other negative interactions with the group.

💯 I squatted my username for a long time, thinking I would avoid someone else taking it and pretending to be me or something, but only recently truly deactivated my account over there. I realized it wasn't serving me, but it likely was serving someone else that I did not want to be serving.

Agreed. 😕 I try not to judge people too harshly because *I* stayed on Twitter for longer than I should have, so it would be unfair to draw the moral judgment line at "when I left". But I left like almost 2 years ago now, so it's getting harder not to judge people. 😅

I appreciate @scanash.com and I reaching this place, apologizing to each other. We're largely strangers here, and being vulnerable enough to apologize is a way to build trust and understanding from behind our screens. We don't necessarily have to agree, but can make a safe space for conversation 🙂

Western society has this weird dissonance: it touts individuality, but produces many artifacts that lack any sense of individual character.

Just because a piece of technology is being rolled out in a not-for-profit or public-service context, it doesn't mean it's "tech for good" or "responsible technology". It can still be extractive, janky as hell, and basically no good at all.

Recently learned the data center point is unlikely for what I'm building. LLM training/inference is gonna be a huge chunk, one that I'm not solving for. Then there are some high compute use cases like audio/video streaming, search, and large-scale data processing. Again, not solving those.

Anyways, if this goal could be realized to its fullest extent, the end goal is: 🔥 Eliminate all SaaS. 🚫 Eliminate ads/subscriptions (most subs = money grab). 🧘 Complete agency over your software/data (and your focus!). 🌳 Drastically reduce the need for data centers.

Today I get to celebrate: I've been working EXTREMELY hard to bring down my cholesterol over the past year. I was able to reduce it from 5.5 mmol/L, when it needs to be < 5.2, down to 4.6. Healthy choices—quitting a high-stress/burnout job, healthy diet, and exercise—means no need to go on statins!

Enjoyed and recommend reading henry.codes/writing/a-we.... A lot of it resonates with me and the direction I'm wanting to go with what I'm building.

"I don’t know exactly when it happened, but at some point I lost my spark." This resonates. For me, it wasn't instantaneous, but I know roughly when the decline started (late 2000s). It's an uneasy feeling. To this day, I'm still struggling to find my old self. A couple of things have helped 🧵

This isn’t a fully thought out position but like The recent NPM package compromises were detected and announced really quickly. And while there are clearly gaps it exposes with GitHub actions and NPM, I wonder if it’s wrong to be pessimistic about the situation
