Many people engaging with today's discourse should really do a little reading on the activism and government response surrounding the Love Canal incident.

Attention Philadelphia! We're hosting a rally to demand that Drexel University maintain The Academy of Natural Sciences Museum open to the public. Join us on Tuesday morning at 10am in front of the academy. Please spread the word, we need all hands on deck! RSVP here: luma.com/1qwnrqz2
Makes no sense to me that the Quaker consortium doesn’t want anything to do with this. None of the 4 schools have a natural history museum, but Swarthmore already has an arboretum and the ANS is just as close to Penn as it is to Drexel.

Couple thoughts on the recent resurgence of "scientific" racism. 1) This is usually treated as a science=head/humanities=heart problem. It is increasingly clear that this is a false framing. Lot of major players are emerging within the humanities (esp phil. depts). Biosci is largely steering clear
Lotta people today becoming negatively polarized into supporting QC’s language laws that have become increasingly draconian over the past decade because a right wing QC nationalist government wanted to target immigrants and historically anglophone universities.
Some really neat work on long-studied traits in stickleback here (and incredible to have this as an undergrad paper, great stuff Alex!).
An undergraduate in my lab, Alex Yeung, posted a preprint this week (& submitted for review): www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Summary thread: We often use trait-environment correlations to infer adaptive value. For instance, #stickleback gill raker # and length covary with lake size. But... /t
Hey folks, this hasn’t gotten much attention, but remember those proposed OMB rule changes we all commented on recently? There’s a new attempt to sneak them just for NSF. We have three days to comment. Please don’t sleep on this!
Three more days to comment on NSF's attempt to smuggle in OMB's already-rejected policies of terminating any grant without cause, gutting civil rights obligations and restricting international collaborations. Submit your comment today! Then call your representatives. 🧪

I disagree with the absolutism of this advice and invite more senior academics to not be judgemental on issues like this when evaluating CVs of more junior folks. Manuscript "in prep" means data collection/analyses is done but writing, which could take many weeks with multiple authors, is ongoing
It’s 2026 and multiple preprint servers exist. Stop listing “in prep” manuscripts on your CV. You are not fooling anyone and it’s almost always going to be perceived negatively. Have letter writers comment on manuscript obstacles/progress.
Most people are not adding in prep manuscripts to their CV because they think it will be viewed as a publication. They are doing it to show you what they are actively working on, and might even be available by the time applications are reviewed. You can simply ignore this info if you want!

This is very good and helpful advice. Search committees can also really help applicants and themselves by standardizing application materials and being more clear about what they want. The tweaks that are needed for each app mean a lot of frustrating… bsky.app/profile/geha...
If you’re applying to academic jobs, don’t use AI to write your cover letter or teaching statement. The most obvious reason is that AI writing will invariably annoy at least one person on the search committee. The other reasons are less obvious, but more important.
