Recently delivered by builders TKMS at Kiel and heavily guarded by police and other forces, the Israeli submarine INS Drakon passed through the Kiel Canal on 1 September 2026, presumably en route to the Eastern Mediterranean. Seen here passing underneath the veteran railway bridge at Rendsburg.

A year ago today, I was lucky enough to witness this beautiful moment just after sunrise over the mist-shrouded River Fal in Cornwall. You can see parts of the National Trust's Trelissick estate, part of the Roseland peninsula and part of King Harry Reach.

1926 vs 2026: Emerging from the fog in the Baltic between 🇩🇰 & 🇩🇪 on 19 June is the 1926-built tall ship Artemis. On close inspection, the 2026-built Legend of the Seas can be spotted in the background. The latter has just been delivered by Meyer Turku to Royal Caribbean and is on her delivery voyage.

A tall ship is seen being overtaken by a massive cruise ship in the clearing fog.

Scandlines' new, Turkish-built cargo ferry The Baltic Whale seen during trials off Rødbyhavn, Denmark (6 March 26). Dubbed "zero direct emission freight ferry", she is of a hybrid design and can be powered both, via battery or diesel electric. Planned to take up service between Denmark and Germany.

A white ship that looks the same at both ends ("double-ended") is seen sailing in sunny conditions.

The Turkish Navy's drone-carrying amphibious assault ship TCG Anadolu (L400) and frigate TCG Istanbul (F515) leaving Kiel naval base during NATO exercise Steadfast Dart on 14 February 2026.

A grey naval ship bearing the pennant number L400 is seen leaving Kiel naval base. The ship is the Turkish amphibious assault ship TCG Anadolu. She is part of the NATO excercise Steadfast Dart 2026 in the Baltic Sea. A grey naval ship bearing the pennant number F515 is seen leaving Kiel naval base. The ship is the Turkish frigate TCG Istanbul. In the background the shipyard cranes of German Naval Yards and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) can be seen. The frigate is part of the NATO excercise Steadfast Dart 2026 in the Baltic Sea.

Roll Group's dock type semi-submersible heavy lift vessel Rolldock Star is seen here arriving at Kiel 14 Jan 26, supposedly to pick up another type 218SG Invincible-class submarine built by TKMS for the Republic of Singapore Navy.

A blue ship with white superstructure located forward and white heavy-lift cranes located aft travels through blue water under a blue sky. The location is Kiel, Germany. The date is 14 January 2026.

As Astoria has gone to the breakers today, it seems appropriate to post a photo in commemoration of this fine ship's long career. She is seen here as Azores, arriving at Kiel almost exactly eleven years ago, on 10 July 2014.

The veteran cruise ship Azores is seen arriving at the German port of Kiel in 2014. In the photo the vessel passes the Friedrichsort lighthouse at the entrance to the inner fjord.
