Two versions of my favourite ship, RV #Polarstern: one that I worked on during an #Arctic expedition in 2022 and one that I have just finished building from bricks. Evidently, I'm not too old for this!
We are now officially at NORAD Catalog Number 100000. There is no GP data available for Saramago yet.
US FCC: “let’s do a consultation on how the community feels about this” Community: “we hate it, don’t do it, it’s real bad, this will impact a lot of people — astronomers, biodiversity, Indigenous communities, more” x 1800 responses FCC: “lol, we don’t care. APPROVED.”
The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) advises: "NO leap second will be introduced at the end of December 2026." For more information, see: hpiers.obspm.fr/iers/bul/bul....
ERA5 single levels and ERA5-Land datasets are now available in an Analysis-Ready Cloud-Optimised (ARCO) Zarr format in the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) Climate Data Store (CDS), enabling faster and more efficient access to key climate data. ⬇️
We now have 263 5-digit catalog numbers left. Projected launch activity (see new.nextspaceflight.com/launches/?q=...) through Jul 13 (5 Starlink, 1 Amazon Leo, Transporter-17) will use at least 220 of those. There are 5 launches in the next 24 hours. We remain on track to hit 69999 by mid-July.

What if two GRACE-FO data assimilation systems produce nearly identical terrestrial water storage estimates - but tell different stories about what is happening underground? 🌍💧 New paper in Water Resources Research: doi.org/10.1029/2025... #DETECT #GRACE-FO #DataAssimilation
If this holds true, I might factor in an almost authentic relocation...
Our island never requires two factor authentication. Have a splendid day.
Congratulations to Frank Flechtner, receiver of the 2026 Vening Meinesz Medal at #EGU26 Also congrats to @gfz.bsky.social Eva Börgens for an indeed Outstanding @g.egu.eu ECS Lecture tonight! 🌍🚀🛰️🌐

We are officially at 68950, but that doesn't include 29 Starlink satellites launched May 1 and 45 rideshares launched May 3. We estimated we would hit 68999 on May 9. Time is running out. We will be making additional changes, like changing the default format to CSV. Watch here and spread the word!

Paper alert 🚨📢 GRACE-like reconstruction of terrestrial water storage, starting from the 1980ies(!). Thx to #openaccess PubFund of @unibonn.bsky.social find it for free at Copernicus ESSD via doi.org/10.5194/essd... This work by PhD cand. C.Hacker is part of @crc1502-detect.bsky.social 1/n
Just heard that netCDF viewer #ncview by David W. Pierce is no longer available from source b/c California Assembly bill about age verification. This might likely affect bsd/linux ports at version updates. Not great. 😶 cirrus.ucsd.edu/ncview/

Very convenient data, esp. if you otherwise have none. We tested the data extensively vs terrestrial water budgets and even against data from the @esaearth.esa.int CCI sea level budget. I might give it a try also as GRACE 'gap filler'
💧🛰️NEW #CRC1502 publication! Hacker et al. (co-authored by our speaker, @jurgenkusche.bsky.social) present a terrestrial water storage dataset from 1984 onward, combining pre-GRACE satellite observations and climate data. Great news for long-term water storage research. 📄 doi.org/10.5194/essd...
🦋PhD work "Multiannual Reconstruction of the Butterfly Effect" 😉 We observe a clear trend in opacity, which might be an early indicator for the human impact on kitchen climate. Formed over 3yrs during lunch times +colleague with hunger for Marzipan (wasn't me I swear!).
Delivering on its mission! Three months into its life in space, @esa.int ’s HydroGNSS is already hard at work. The mission tracks Earth’s water cycle by analysing navigation signals reflected off the planet’s surface. Curious to see some examples? 🔗 www.esa.int/Applications...

Multidecadal reconstruction of terrestrial water storage changes by combining pre-GRACE satellite observations and climate data
Abstract. The Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) and its follow-on mission, GRACE-FO, have observed global mass changes and transports, expressed as terrestrial water storage anomalies (T...

The Two Line Element (TLE) format, which has been used to describe orbits of unique satellite objects for decades, is running out of available numbers within its standard. It appears many users are still not aware or have not switched to alternatives. (me too tbh since I'm not running op. services)
1/ Banners went up all over CelesTrak today because users continue to request GP & SupGP data in TLE formats. Of 1,200,556 requests on Feb 28, 95,675 are being redirected from deleted legacy files. Tens of thousands more are getting HTTP 404 errors.
