Fishes with words about evil, fighting knights symbolizing the Ottoman conflicts of the Habsburg monarchy etc. appeared, and they all predicted something about the state of the world.

I often hear people say things like "What is the point of this research?" and the thing that is important to remember is that what we call "basic" research is all about finding out more about our world, so that scientists who do translational research can put that knowledge to use.
