Today everyone — EVERYONE — should take a moment and read Ray Bradbury's four-page short story from 1950.
Today is the day the story There Will Come Soft Rain is set. An amazing and heartbreaking work of fiction for our modern age. Read it here:

Articulate Harp snail (Harpa articularis). I've never seen a snail with this much mantle extended... it took me a while to work out what was going on in this photo! #MarineLife #Invertebrates #Wildlife 🌿
Because the 1st is a Saturday, “How is it August already?!” will be observed today, Friday, July 31, 2026. Please panic accordingly.

Mind the teeth! This one was just passing by, but these guys can do some serious damage if they're defending a nest. Titan Triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens), Misool, Raja Ampat #MarineLife #Wildlife 🐟🌿
New research just dropped today that makes octopuses even weirder than they already are… let me explain🧵🧪🐙🐡🦑
I wrote about the Nolan Odyssey for the LRB. I'll summarize some of my main points below, in case you don't feel like reading all that. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Cool new behavior caught on video! This is a special type of octopus known as a #papernautilus (aka #argonaut) and her shell is a little less than 5cm. Watch as she extends and retracts her fleshy mantle - at the end, she rapidly retracts it all! #blackwater #blackwaterdiving
This is awesome. I had no idea that sea cucumbers mimicked nudis! #MarineLife
The animal on the left is a nudibranch sea slug (Phyllidia sp.) but the one on the left is a mimic. It's actually a juvenile sea cucumber! #sluglife #invertebrates Photos were taken in Boracay, Philippines.

Marine biologists in Northeast Greenland used an ROV to observe, for the first time in the wild, a mature female bobtail squid (Rossia moelleri) and her egg masses. This Arctic species is present and reproducing even in subzero waters! 🧪 link.springer.com/article/10.1...
Seafloor snacking at its spiniest 🦀 This decadent decapod, Paralithodes sp., is also known as a king crab. Spiny king crabs crawl across the seafloor in search of their next meal, which could be other crabs, sea stars, dead animals, or organic material that sank from the surface waters above.

I should really check what's going on in that box. It's been a while.
If you hoard those cables for long enough …
If you think photographing birds in flight is difficult, you want to try moths!😅 This is a wonderful Hummingbird Hawkmoth, photographed yesterday from my bedroom window, just as it banked around to change direction!😀😍 Just look at that proboscis 🦋 (The moth looks a bit like a fish doesn't it!)😁
Blackfin Barracuda (Sphyraena qenie). Pic from My Reef (yes, it's really called that; I have no idea why), Raja Ampat And yes, they look just as grumpy as every other barracuda I've come across. I've never seen one smile. #MarineLife #Wildlife 🌿🐟
🦀see a crab, post a crab 🦀 First crab my kid caught!
🦀 see a crab, post a crab 🦀 Zebra crab!
In case you missed it, the account mrrobertbob posted an extremely viral but misleading pic of a "flapjack octopus" who then blocked everyone who correctly pointed out it was GenAI. Stop sharing posts with images without credit/provenance. Lots of fakes/grifter accounts out there.
Unfortunately this seems to me like another example of a real animal, slopped by AI 😡🦑 Check these source images from @mbarinews.bsky.social who actually observed it. No frontal "mouth" (just a fold between arms further down at most), no suckers visible when on the bottom, eyes less forward
A Funeral Jorunna (according to the book) or a Mourning Dorid (according to iNat). Jorunna funebris, Raja Ampat 🌿 #MarineLife #Invertebrates #Wildlife
Glorious bit of trivia from Eddie Johns on Threads: Since Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1865, every single President has been alive at the same time as Herbert Hoover. It would still have applied even if Kamala Harris had won. She was born the exact same day Hoover died, October 20, 1964.
I am once again begging Hollywood to stop using the Greek alphabet for an Ancient World movie, if they can't afford to even throw a couple of quid at anyone with an inkling of the language. Unless they really think audiences are dying to see THS THDPSSSSPS
Turtle flyby! This was a big girl, and she really didn't care much about puny humans getting in the way. Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), Sawandarek, Raja Ampat #MarineLife #Wildlife 🤿
“Sorry, when I said I’m from Chicago, I meant the one in Ontario,” said the ex-commander-in-chief, adding that he had never been to the United States but had heard some “pretty crazy things” about the “stuff going on down there.”
