I'm very hesitant to talk shit about someone's writing abilities, not least of all because I published a book, thus leaving myself open to the same criticism. But, on top of everything else, that HWA editorial was, shall we say, not up to the level that one would expect from a professional author.
They should start adding this to those memorial decals that people put on the backs of their cars.

It’s been a while and I kinda forgot that almost every character has an insanely stereotypical accent which Quinn insists on writing phonetically. Oof.
I think I'm gonna read a bunch of Seabury Quinn stories. I'm in the mood for mindless escapism and monster-fighting.
Guy Fieri: Man, I can already tell that’s going to be a flavor BOMB! I can’t WAIT to get my hands on that savory dynamite. Hooowee!!! 107-year-old man, pouring cheese into lard: yes, guy. Hunter Fieri, bumping into pans, standing too close: You know, they say cheese is a food’s hairdo.

I try to be fair-minded and I would have given the benefit of the doubt if they had only used the "automating tedious tasks" argument. But when you *start off* by defending people using it for covers? GTFO here. Fuck the HWA, now and forever.
There is a lengthy pro-AI screed in the latest HWA newsletter and it is . . . a mood.
Good god, this is one of the most awkward opening sentences I've ever read.
The way he died will undoubtedly make him slightly better-remembered, but if you want to know how many people will still care about Charlie Kirk a hundred years from now, ask someone on the street how they feel about Aimee Semple-McPherson or Billy Sunday.

But speaking of trust... there are several food outlets that I flat-out have not patronized since Covid, because their employees wouldn't mask properly. If I can't trust you to wear a mask, how can I trust you to wash your hands before you handle my food?
"I don't trust anyone who is vaxxed." Wow, it's a good thing I don't give a flying fuck whether anti-vaxxers trust me or not.

I'm a full Professor of Immunology and fully vaccinated. I didn't get vaccinated out of obedience, but after decades of studying the immune system and evaluating all evidence. Calling that "lack of critical thinking" is not an argument. It's ideology masked as pretend intellect.
It's rare for wildfire smoke to make it this far west (we live close to the ocean and the wind tends to blow inland, but it shifted today). It was kinda hazy this afternoon and the sun was blood red, so that ain't good. At least it doesn't smell like a bonfire outside yet.
There has apparently never been a collection of Horace McCoy's short fiction. They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is one of my favorite books and I just started reading I Should Have Stayed Home, so I want to read some of his short fiction from the pulps.
I've looked at a lot of these posts of pizza restaurants around the world and, hey, different strokes... but in my opinion, most countries really undercook their pizza. They seem to just get it to the point where the cheese melts and call it good. Ya gotta get some brown on that cheese!

I want to write a series of books where Samuel Beckett and a young Andre The Giant solve mysteries together.

I read Barbara Comyns's The Juniper Tree this week. It dragged a bit in the middle* and then the ending seemed a little rushed, but over all I loved it. I'm ashamed to admit that I was only sort-of familiar with the Grimms' tale, so I didn't realize while reading it how faithful an adaptation....
I was stalking a kingfisher in my kayak the other evening (I'm a glutton for punishment, I know) and I looked up to find myself face to face with this little one. 🌿🦊
your apartment, the sport of basketball, and the Republic of Korea are all social constructs. mere recognition of this fact does not actually make the question of whether you are standing in your own apartment, playing basketball, or a Korean national up in the air until settled by op ed editors
The other night I had a dream that my wife told me that Chuck Woolery died and for some reason she was really upset about it and I was just like "I thought he died a couple years ago."

Okay, I just went down a discontinuedfoods rabbithole, so I had to search for this. I generally don't buy into Pizza Hut nostalgia. Their pizza was honestly always pretty mid. But, I would drop a bus full of orphans from a crane into an active volcano to eat a priazzo again.
Pizza Hut Priazzo (1985-1993): Basically a cheese pizza baked on top of another pizza which itself was covered in multiple meats and vegetables, each Priazzo contained A FULL POUND OF CHEESE!
