The best way to make this happen is to support YA contemp, especially titles that aren’t household names! Buy it, tell your libraries to buy it, check it out once they have it on shelves. Teens will always, always need YA contemp!!

🚨THE CAT IS FINALLY OUT OF THE BAG🚨 my second book has a name - RISEBALL - and a home - dutton! - and an editor - the inimitable @andrewkarre.bsky.social !! it will be bookshelves in summer 2027!!!!! i cannot wait for you all to meet amy and josie, the horrible nightmare sisters of my dreams

Andrew Karre at Dutton Children's Books has acquired, at auction, Riseball by Stonewall Award-winning author Victoria Zeller (One of the Boys), a contemporary YA novel about estranged sisters who must play on the same softball team after one of them comes out as transgender. Publication is scheduled for summer 2027; Jordan Hamessley at JABberwocky Literary Agency brokered the deal for North American English rights.

Fuck this. As an industry, we are in an existential crisis of book banning because of homophobia and transphobia weaponized by racist authoritarians. “Dirty books” are not the problem. Censorship is. Make whatever books you like, but don’t you dare call other books dirty in your shitty marketing.
