Stars of physics are in Westminster right now to call on the Government to halt funding cuts to astronomy and particle physics research. Professor Brian Cox called them "inexplicable", urging the Government to instead "trust, inspire and continue to invest in the next generation of scientists".

This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.

yeah, just out of interest, how many people choose the pen on the right for real work or art? See a lot of them in professional workplaces, do you?

Great thread! There’s a small (but not zero) chance that 2024 YR4 becomes a menace. The bad news is that we might not know for sure until 2028. The good news is that we should be able to do something about it 😀🔭

The chance of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting out planet in 2032 is now 1.5%, or 1 in 67. The OVERWHELMING likelihood is that the asteroid will miss Earth. But for the first time ever, we might have to seriously consider a deflection mission soon. Let me explain. 🧵 (1/x)

We're now into February 2025, and still no outcomes from the 2024 grants rounds. STFC sent an email update to all PIs this morning which basically says no news is still no news, and that they aim to send out the results as soon as they can. 🔭

STFC Astronomy grants round results (due Oct/Nov) are delayed until late Jan, because they're still awaiting the outcome of the govt spending review. Will cause massive uncertainty and stress for everyone involved. 😢 Will also make it impossible for funded projects to start as planned in spring. 🔭
