If AI kills a whole bunch of people and causes untold others to suffer through some sort of apocalypse, it's less the companies would be worrying about regulations and more they should be worried that governments won't enforce normal private property laws.

These are the types of catastrophic scenarios I keep warning about. They stop well short of human “extinction” but would easily cause regional or global instability and suffering, perhaps even mass death. But what is the concern among the AI companies themselves? Regulation.

Top executives at Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI companies are privately gaming out scenarios for a public and political revolt after a catastrophic AI event.
Why it matters: These officials anticipate a large-scale event, most likely a cyberattack, that shuts down access to financial services, internet connectivity, or even power and water.
Between the lines: The planning involves red-teaming for worst-case scenarios. It focuses mainly on racing to educate members of Congress.
Company executives know regulation has no chance of passing right now, but still want to shape the legislation and policies U.S. leaders will turn to after a first catastrophic event.

They’re live-streaming the execution of the person they think they can get away with doing that to first. It’s a test. If they can do that, they’ll expand the margins of permission.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

X post from AI industry insider Alvin Sng :

My wife: Can you read our baby a book?
Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.
Me: I can train a voice model.

The most ordinary man imaginable came to my home state to tell me to ‘get out of America’ while he & Absent Ashley enjoyed the comfort of buildings my ancestors helped build. Imagine standing on the shoulders of the ppl who built this country & then telling their descendants they don’t belong here/2

And even the "perfect" victims are often downplayed. Witness Brock Allan Turner's rape of his victim: out in the open where two men witnessed and reported it. And yet, went to trial and got an extremely minor sentence. Later changed his name to Allan Turner to try to hide from his past.

Socially and in the legal system, our understanding of responses to sexual violence is purposefully uninformed and therefore limited to only “perfect” victims (who don’t really exist), so that we don’t have to actually combat sexual violence or believe victims or hold perpetrators accountable.

What if every mayor and member of every city council was a Mamdani type? Every governor and member of every state legislature? Every member of Congress? Every president? Like just think about that for a minute. Every elected official just doing stuff people want instead of being crappy.

Last month, we refurbished 10 tennis courts in Crotona Park — the only public tennis courts in the Bronx with lights for night play. We stopped by recently to see how things were going. Thank you to NYJTL, USTA and Yonex for helping us deliver high-quality public spaces that New Yorkers deserve.

the two big ai stories to kick off the week are - meta ai giving your address to strangers on fb marketplace - stole a scientific breakthrough and presented it as its own work this is what we get instead of healthcare or third spaces or public transportation or pick literally anything else

they are going to come for your contraception, it is literally only a matter of time. I just replaced my IUD and if you think any of the long-term methods of contraception would be a good fit for you and/or your partner, now is the time to do it

MURRAY: The Trump admin falsely labeled birth control as abortion. Do you agree that an IUD is an abortifacient? OVERTON: If confirmed, I'll be fully briefed M: That's not an answer. The prospect of an FDA commissioner who doesn't know that birth control isn't an abortion is deeply alarming O: 😊

Yes it's good this is seeing the light of day. It would have been better to see the light of day during the primaries, when these corrupt people could have lost elections. Or even better if the Biden admin had done anything to address the corruption

13/ By the end of 2024, FBI agents had enough evidence to pursue a sweeping bribery probe that could ensnare top lawmakers of both political parties. They asked their supervisors to approve a new investigation. Then Trump returned to the White House.

Troy Jackson responds: “This is corruption of the highest order. Susan Collins delivered millions in taxpayer dollars for a corrupt donor bankrolling her campaign, & then Donald Trump helped her cover it up. No wonder she voted with him 96% of the time & has rubberstamped his agenda to hurt Maine.”

Sen. Susan Collins helped steer millions in federal defense contracts to Navatek, whose CEO illegally funneled thousands of dollars to her campaign. The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers. Then Trump gutted the unit in charge. THREAD 🧵
