Heya, Our Thursday gig in Totnes has morphed into an altogether less informal event. So just come, make any kind of donation on the door, byob, come and hang out. We'll be on at some point around 8pm ish and be playing our set in prep for our festival gig in London on Sunday.

What's the story, songwriters? I invite you to join us in sharing a song of yours today, using #HomeMadeMusic, and quote this post if you can. This week's theme: Post a song that tells a story. As ever, you're free to take as broad an interpretation of that as you like. #musicsky #musiciansky

We decided to increase our garden's resilience when we have another long dry summer. We added another waterbutt, a 720L one bringing our total capacity to 2000L. Unfortunately I had a "senior moment" and cut the inlet hole the wrong side, hence the Heath Robinson pipework.

Large waterbutt, 1.8 metres tall!

In 1866 #Torbay was hit by the Great Gale. Over 60 ships were sunk and 100 sailors killed. The nearest lifeboat was at Teignmouth and was brought overland to Torquay. #Stormfest 160 commemorated the event yesterday. Later that year the first Torbay lifeboat station was established.

Here is an impulsive purchase from Waterstones in Newton Abbot. A reprint (facsimile) of 1863 Bradshaws Descriptive Railway Handbook. I did NOT buy brightly coloured blazer and trousers to go with it.

I just dug out this sun filter for a theodolite that I saved from a disposal of obsolete equipment at work many years ago. It will be a safe way to watch the eclipse. Prior to GPS we would make daily observations of the sun to determine azimuth as we laid out lines across the desert.

Remembering how the drought ended in 1976. We were at Reading Festival and arrived very late after a vehicle breakdown. Coming up the M4 the sky had turned black. The setting sun appeared between the sheet of cloud and the horizon. Then the heavens opened.
