A stress response can be a great starting point for discovering new biology! By following genes regulated during the chloroplast unfolded protein response, we’re discovering novel factors involved in chloroplast homeostasis. Here’s the first one we characterized: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
As part of the @viennabiocenter.bsky.social Summer School “Talents for Future” program, Cristina Cordero Garzona joined Nick Irwin’s lab at the GMI for 3 months, where she used CRISPR to investigate the role of horizontally acquired genes in plants. @vbcscitraining.bsky.social
The GMI & IMBA were happy to host outstanding Ukrainian students @viennabiocenter.bsky.social as part of the AITHYRA Summer School! Thanks to Nick Irwin, Darya Kripkiy Casado, Arie Fridrich, Helena Okulski, Kirill Salewskij, Olena Kim, and Dmytro Rzemovskyi for making this event possible.

New paper! A team led by @dbuendia.bsky.social and group leader Arturo Marí-Ordóñez at the GMI of the @oeaw.bsky.social investigated how plants silence potentially parasitic transposons when these “jumping genes” take over most of the genome.
On July 24, the GMI and IMBA welcomed 120 curious young minds for an all-day KinderUni Day! The day began with an interactive lecture: “Superpower Diversity: Why being different makes you strong.” Liam Dolan, GMI Scientific Director, and Barbara Kraus, IMBA Managing Director, opened the program.
The GMI led a #KinderUni workshop at the @oeaw.bsky.social! Kids explored plant seeds, and the many different methods plants use to disperse them. Through games and hands-on activities, kids experienced how seeds fly, float, shoot, stick, or offer a reward as different ways of getting around.
