Dangerous and extreme heat will persist across the Southwest U.S. through tomorrow, before slowly migrating eastward across the central Plains and southeastern U.S. by this weekend. Monsoonal showers will help bring some relief from extreme temperatures across portions of the Desert Southwest.

Yosemite Sam Fire
Alt: Yosemite Sam running around with his britches on fire until he finds a puddle and sits down on it , at which point the flames go out and there are three large puffs of smoke coming out from under him . The scene is from the movie " Who Framed Roger Rabbit " .

People! Listen to black voices. Black women have put in the hard work within the DNC. In the year of 2026, we should know better. Yet, it seems my brethren just can’t get past their privilege even if it means we hurdle towards devastation.
If you’re outside, the best breathing protection is to wear an N95 or N100 mask. These masks filter out most fine particles in smoke, but not hazardous gases like carbon monoxide. Avoid strenuous outdoor activity. #wawildfire #wawx
Dear Bluesky, Please connect me with people who: 📖 Love reading books. 🍫 Love eating chocolate. Thank you so much! #BookSky
Please stop flying your personal drones over wildfires. They can ground or collide with our firefighting aircraft, disrupting time critical firefighting and threatening people’s homes. Your photos are not worth someone’s home. If you fly, we can’t.
I need people to get that just 'cause someone's fired / not running again for reelection does NOT guarantee that they're going to suddenly rock the system that has propped them up, made them extremely wealthy, and has given them oodles of long-standing/long-lasting power. Stop being naive. JFC. 🤦♀️
This smoke is thick enough it may mask fire radiative power that drives the smoke source info the model requires for good forecasts, and therefore, this may lead to underestimates of smoke in coming days. We saw this in the models for Sept 2020 in the same region.
18Z HRRR-Smoke model predicts wildfire smoke to cause "Unhealthy" (red) to "Very Unhealthy" (purple) AQI in the major population centers of the Pacific NW and SW BC on Tuesday as a ridge of high pressure brings NE winds. Also a major heat risk for Portland, OR, with temps in the upper 90s .
PNW folks, please, please, please take this scenario seriously. Make a plan now for staying safe during this upcoming week.

We got 0.71" of rain today and, I tell you, I am close to weeping. We needed this sooooo, soooo much! Thank you, nature!
Was woken up to the sweet sound of rain about a half hour ago and it's still going. Gosh, we've needed this, So badly. 😌
We should all microwave tea - in true British fashion - in honor of @gailsimone.bsky.social's birthday! Happy birthday, you agent of absolute chaos! 🥳👍

Severe weather and flash flooding are expected across parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast through the night with additional flash flooding concerns across New England on Wednesday.
St. Cloud (MN) folks: This Friday & Saturday is the annual "Picklefest" wherein SCSU Community Garden folks prep and pack 500 quarts of cucumbers, dill, and garlic. If you'd like to help, please do! We'll be in the basement of Garvey 10A-3P each day until done. (DM if more info needed.) 😀👍🥒🧄
This whole thread is worth a read. Also brought up a memory of an encounter I had with a colleague (from my 4-yr HIED institution in the Midwest) where, a day after a funeral, he said, "I didn't, uh, I didn't realise you were...[*whispering*] Jewish." As though it was something alien/shameful. 🙄
I am always trying to explain to folks that most Americans have never met a Jew and people do not believe me and I just need you to understand that the perception that we are a powerful group in this country is intentionally created by antisemites and you’re unknowingly buying in.
Lots of severe weather ongoing today across eastern Wisconsin and there is now a tornado that has hit parts of Appleton. Stay weather aware this afternoon and seek shelter immediately if warnings are issued!
Hurricane Genevieve, after forming in the Eastern Pacific late last week, underwent rapid intensification in the last 36 hours, at one point strengthening into a Category 5 storm. Genevieve is currently at Category 4 strength and will continue moving northwest over the ocean.
A fun fact: While I initially rolled my eyes every time I added Alt-text to images I posted ("Takes so long!" I'd whine), I've noticed that since making it a self requirement, I am *way* more intentional in how I describe things when working with students, etc. It's been a neat skill to hone. 👍
