Very cool new paper from the Tepass lab. they use optigenetics to enhance clustering of E-cadherin in vivo during embryo morphogenesis. This slows cell intercalation and axis extension, slows neural stem cell invagination but does not slow mesoderm invagination by apical constriction. WOW! 🧪

E-cadherin clustering as a regulator of morphogenesis

Cell adhesion enables animal multicellular development. E-cadherin and the cadherin-catenin adhesion complex at adherens junctions are engaged in dynamic interactions with actomyosin generated contrac...

So excited our paper is out now!! It was a very fun project where we combined vertex models and in vivo experiments, and we showed cell divisions play a dual role for the Drosophila ME boundary by increasing tissue fluidity!

Check out our new publication @dev-journal.bsky.social! If you thought that cell divisions challenge tissue boundaries ... you got half of the story! Using in vivo quantitative microscopy and math. modelling we show that divisions fluidize tissues and facilitate boundary refinement. 🧪 #drosophila
