Gaming Herald - I’m here to fill your Bluesky feed with great games!

Skigill, PC/Steam - Ultra-clever idea for a Bullet Heaven/Survivors-like game where the area you navigate IS the skill tree. This one has cute monochrome visuals (those lizards!!) and a banging chiptune soundtrack. I can’t wait to see how it opens up with later unlockables.

Ouros, Steam PC/MacOS, iOS, Android - This tactile puzzle game is the epitome of chill and calm. You’re moving points on a 2d vector to stretch and transform, ensuring it hits all the shapes in order. Sounds complex, but it’s easy to get and fun without being frustrating. Perfect on Deck with touch!

The gameplay screen shows the main dot which moves around the object, which is creating a large, multicolored loop reaching out to a triangle labeled 1 and another dot on the opposite side. CD-ROM, PC/Steam - I think the logic of a couple earlier puzzles is a bit too esoteric, but this is a great way to spend an afternoon. Point and click your way through a stack of old CDs and utilize the contained programs to solve a bunch of puzzles. Very clever and pleasant to tease through!

Puzzle Depot, PC/Steam/Itch.io - Easily one of the best Sokoban-style games I’ve seen, this game features large levels with lots of screens to mix short- and long-term goals. Typically seems insurmountable, but always makes you feel like a genius. Thoughtful & funny plot, great pixel art and music.

Ducky’s Delivery Service, PC/Steam/Itch - I feel like this could be could be an all-time competitive score-chaser. Words can’t express how it feels to skillfully flap around these levels, tossing packages into mailboxes as fast and precisely as possible. Wonderful music. A masterful arcadey snack.

Our games industry is people. Our studios are people. Our teams people, our games by people for people. Our games are made by people, in groups of people, in teams of people, making people things for people. The magic is people, and the people deserve so much better than all this. I am so sorry.

I went digging through Steam to proffer my official summer sale game recommendations! Most everything is at its lowest price yet and I have used the best parts of my brain to locate the games at the perfect point between affordable and noteworthiness. Gonna thread it up like the greats do!

Iron Nest: Heavy Turret Simulator (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam - This game might have been made just for me. I spent two hours in this dieselpunk bunker calculating bearing and elevation and triangulating targets and I couldn’t be more thrilled. This game really trusts the player. Highly recommended!

And with that I've played a whopping 18 demos this Next Fest! Honestly, this might be one of the best Next Fests yet, I've played quite a lot and there's been some incredible ones. The highlights: Silver Pines, Well Dweller, Sprawl Zero, Welcome to Elderfield.

Screenshot from Silver Pines showing a ski lift being mobbed by crows Screenshot from Well Dweller showing a pretty horrible creepy boss monster, it's got a round face with spikes and a creepy grin, its body is adorned with masks Screenshot from Sprawl Zero, the player character is firing a rifle, there's a distinctly grey/brown ruined cityscape Screenshot from Welcome to Elderfield, the text says "A Cornstalker appears..." and there's what looks like a scarecrow, but his head is corncobs

About Fishing (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam - What an apt title, because this game features a lot of fishing, but is also About Fishing in a ponderous way. Lo-fi dithered visuals in a way I’ve never seen before add to this game’s unsettling vibe. The fishing gameplay is surprisingly meticulous?

Hyper Bun Buster: Rocker Hammer Action (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam Deck - I don’t think I’m familiar with the inspiration, but this game easily won me over with its classic arcade action. Beautifully animated spritework and jazzy music seal the deal. I love whacking things into other things!

BildBildBildBild

Arcane Eats (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam Deck - if you’re a certain type of person (say, exactly like my partner), then a roguelike deckbuilder where you run a fantasy tavern cooking meals for customers is laser-focused on being exactly What You Crave. This is going to be so many people’s obsession.

BildBildBildBild

Blood Dungeon (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam Deck - Yes, yet another Survivors-like game, but a very, very good one! Messhof are masters of their uglycute visual style and the hoppy honkin’ soundtrack and DIY audio have an easy charm to them. Nothing you haven’t played before, but highly engaging!

BildBildBildBild

Fruitbearer (Next Fest demo), PC/Steam - Instant wishlist here! What a clever blend of Suika/merging gameplay, card-based mechanics, and roguelike progression. The developers have clearly studied the greats in the genre and crafted something really special. I didn’t want to stop playing this one.
